You've heard the pitch before: "Just describe what you want and AI will build it." Usually, the reality lands somewhere between "impressive demo, useless in production" and "I spent 45 minutes prompting and got a rectangle." The SketchUp Claude Connector, announced by Trimble on April 28, 2026, is something different. It's not a rendering assistant. It's not a chatbot bolted onto a toolbar. It's a proper MCP integration that puts Claude inside a live cloud SketchUp session and has it build actual geometry from plain language. The short version: Trimble built a bridge between SketchUp and Anthropic's Claude AI using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) framework. When you use it, Claude isn't just answering questions about SketchUp — it's operating a live SketchUp session in the cloud on your behalf, placing geometry, adjusting dimensions, and responding to follow-up instructions in the same chat thread.
Most "AI for CAD" products work like this: you export your model, upload it to some service, get back a rendered image or a text suggestion, and manually incorporate the result. The feedback loop is slow. The Claude Connector inverts that loop. You stay in the chat. Claude is working in SketchUp on your behalf. When you want to change the roofline or shift a wall, you say so in plain language and Claude adjusts in the same session — no re-export, no re-import.
The resulting file is a standard .skp that opens in SketchUp for Web, Desktop, iPad, or iPhone. You can take over at any point and continue modeling in the normal SketchUp interface.
Best for: Early massing and concept modeling, furniture and millwork layouts, quick site context geometry, clients who keep saying "can you just try it this way?" six times in a row.
You don't need to install anything into SketchUp itself. The connector runs as an MCP server that Claude can access from any Claude interface that supports MCP tools. Here's the basic workflow:

The version-history tracking within a single chat session is the feature that makes iteration practical. If you tell Claude "make the roof steeper" and hate the result, you can roll back in the conversation and try a different angle.
Pro tip: Give Claude dimensions upfront. "A living room 5.5 meters wide by 7.2 meters deep with a 2.7-meter ceiling height, one 2.4-meter opening on the north wall, and three windows on the east wall evenly spaced" will get you something you can actually work with. Claude iterates toward accuracy, but specificity in your first prompt saves three rounds of corrections.
The connector is strongest at work where the geometry follows rules you can describe.
Massing models and site context. "A five-story mixed-use building, 12 meters wide by 30 meters deep, ground floor 5 meters, upper floors 3.5 meters each, flat roof" gets you a plausible massing shell in one pass. Furniture and millwork. "A kitchen island 900mm wide by 2100mm long by 900mm high with a 40mm overhang and 200mm toe kick" produces clean, accurate geometry immediately. Repetitive structural geometry. Stair flights, railing runs, column grids — tedious to model by hand, very easy to describe. Iterating on client feedback. If a client says "move the garage to the other side," describing that in Claude is often faster than trying to mirror and re-align existing geometry.
Best for (in practice): The 20 minutes at the start of a project where you're trying to get a schematic volume into 3D. Not the 20 hours after that where you're building out all the details.
Let's be honest about the ceiling, because you'll bump into it quickly on real projects.
Complex organic geometry. Curved surfaces, freeform roofs, compound miter joins — still better modeled by hand or via plugins like Curviloft. Claude's output at this point is primarily push/pull geometry. Material and texture application. The connector builds geometry only — no SketchUp materials, no UV mapping, no render-ready surfaces. You finish that in SketchUp normally. Plugin-dependent features. Skatter for vegetation, Profile Builder for wall profiles — those still run in your local SketchUp environment. Claude's session doesn't have your extension library. Large, high-detail models. The connector slows down on high poly counts or complex nested components. Use it for rough-in geometry, then refine in SketchUp Desktop.
Watch out for: Dimension creep. When Claude iterates, it sometimes resets an earlier dimension to a round number without flagging the change. Verify your critical dimensions in SketchUp after any significant iteration pass.
Access to the SketchUp Claude Connector requires: (1) A Claude account — Pro or higher for MCP server support; (2) A SketchUp account — the free entitlement gives you 30 saved models, further saves require SketchUp Pro. There's no separate charge for the connector itself. If you already have both subscriptions, you're ready to go.
Pro tip: The 30-model entitlement counts distinct saved files, not sessions. If you iterate within a single session and save one final file, that's one model against your count. Keep your sessions long and your final saves intentional.
The Claude Connector doesn't replace your modeling workflow. It creates a new front door to it. Think of your current design process: sketch on paper, translate to massing in SketchUp, detail out, document in LayOut, render in Lumion or Enscape. The connector accelerates the "translate to massing" step for early-stage concepts.
Here's a realistic integration: Client brief → Claude Connector — explore 2–3 massing options in 30 minutes instead of 2 hours, download the best as .skp. SketchUp Desktop — import, begin detailing, add components, apply materials, set up scenes. Lumion — export for final high-resolution visualization. What the connector doesn't replace: steps 2 and 3, or any project past the schematic phase.
Best for (workflow positioning): A super-charged concept sketch generator — the tool you use when you need a 3D form to react to, not the tool you use to finish a deliverable.
If you have Claude Pro and SketchUp Pro, the answer is yes — the cost of trying it is zero and the upside on early-phase modeling is real. The 30-model free entitlement is generous enough to pressure-test it on live work without commitment.
If you're deciding whether to subscribe to Claude Pro partly for this feature: the connector delivers clear value in concept and schematic phases. If most of your SketchUp time is in design development or construction documents, it's a nice-to-have, not a must-have. The real signal to watch is how Trimble develops this over the next two release cycles — if future versions start applying material palettes, writing LayOut annotations, or generating component content, it becomes indispensable for the full project lifecycle.
For now: use it for massing, furniture blocking, client "what if" conversations. Let SketchUp Desktop do the rest.
The SketchUp Claude Connector is the first genuinely useful AI geometry tool to ship for SketchUp — not because it replaces modeling, but because it replaces the most tedious part: the first pass. Getting rough geometry into SketchUp has always been the easy-but-slow bottleneck at the start of every project. This removes it.
