Most SketchUp users spend years pushing and pulling flat faces, building rectilinear boxes, and wondering why their architecture always looks like a Lego model. Then they discover Artisan — and suddenly terrain mounds, vaulted canopies, rounded furniture, and organic site features are within reach. This guide walks through exactly what Artisan does, when to reach for it, and the workflows that actually save time instead of creating new ones.
Artisan, developed by Dale Freya (known in the SketchUp community as "Whaat"), started life as the SubdivideAndSmooth plugin before growing into a full organic modeling toolkit. According to Alexander Schreyer's Architectural Design with SketchUp, it remains "the organic-modeling plugin of choice in SketchUp" — and that reputation has only solidified since.
The core idea is simple: take any SketchUp geometry, subdivide its faces into smaller polygons, and then sculpt or smooth those polygons into curved forms. Where SketchUp's native Push/Pull and Follow Me produce sharp-edged results, Artisan produces surfaces that look like they were modeled in clay.
For architects, this opens up several workflows that are otherwise awkward or impossible in SketchUp:
Terrain and site sculpting. Sandbox Tools can rough out a terrain, but Artisan lets you push and pull the mesh with a brush instead of individual vertices — far faster for organic site topography.
Curved roof forms. Vaulted ceilings, shell structures, and parametric canopies that would take dozens of steps with native tools can be blocked out quickly with Artisan's Smooth Subdivide command.
Soft furnishings and biophilic elements. Cushions, planters, green walls, and sculptural forms for interior presentations all become achievable without importing bloated geometry from other software.
Conceptual massing. Early-stage massing studies with flowing, non-rectilinear forms — the kind clients love and SketchUp usually fights — become part of the normal modeling workflow.
Artisan is not a single command — it is a toolbar of tools that work together. Understanding each one prevents the common mistake of trying to sculpt before the geometry is ready.
1. Smooth Subdivide
This is the entry point. Select any group or component and run Smooth Subdivide to split every face into four smaller faces. The result is a denser mesh that supports smooth surface editing.
Best for: Preparing a rough SketchUp box or terrain mesh for sculpting. Run it once or twice to avoid generating millions of faces that slow the model.
Pro tip: Work inside a group. Artisan adds a huge number of faces, and keeping them grouped prevents them from sticking to the rest of your model geometry.
2. Sculpt Brushes
After subdividing, the Sculpt tools let you paint geometry up, down, or to the side using a circular brush. The three main brushes are Push/Pull (displaces faces along their normals), Smooth (averages neighboring vertices), and Pinch (pulls vertices toward the brush center).
Best for: Terrain sculpting, rounding out furniture models, and adding natural variation to site elements like planting mounds or graded embankments.
Watch out for: Start with low strength (20–30%) and build up shape incrementally — it is much easier to add displacement than to undo it.
3. Crease Edges
Subdivision smooths everything — which is exactly what you do not want when a form needs a sharp edge. Creasing an edge tells Artisan to preserve its sharpness during subdivision, producing forms that are smooth in some areas and crisp in others.
Best for: Furniture with softened corners but defined edges, architectural details like rounded parapets with sharp corners, or any form where organic surfaces meet hard geometry.
Pro tip: As Schreyer notes, you can "subdivide any object and then crease, push/pull, sculpt, paint, and otherwise deform and change polygons to your artistic liking." Creasing is what makes that combination professional rather than blobby.
4. Vertex Tools Integration
Artisan works well alongside thomthom's Vertex Tools plugin (sold separately, $20), which gives you precise vertex selection and transformation on dense meshes. If you need to move specific points of a subdivided surface by an exact distance, Vertex Tools is the companion that makes Artisan precise instead of freehand.
Best for: Parametric or technically accurate organic forms — a curved facade panel that must hit specific dimensions — where freehand sculpting alone is not sufficient.
This is the highest-value use of Artisan for most architects.
Step 1: Use SketchUp's native Sandbox > From Contours or From Scratch to generate a base mesh. For a courtyard or small site, a 20×20m grid with 1m spacing works well.
Step 2: Group the terrain mesh before running Artisan — this prevents the dense mesh from merging with the rest of your model.
Step 3: Run Smooth Subdivide once. This doubles the polygon count and prepares the surface. You rarely need more than one subdivision pass for terrain work.
Step 4: Use the Push/Pull Sculpt brush to rough out the topography. Mounds, berms, and drainage channels can be sketched in quickly by pulling up or pushing down broad areas.
Step 5: Switch to the Smooth brush over rough transitions to blend the sculpted areas into natural-looking curves.
Step 6: Run Artisan's Reduce Polygons command before saving to keep file sizes manageable when terrain goes into a rendering scene.
Result: A site model that looks survey-accurate rather than stairstepped — one that imports cleanly into Lumion or Enscape without the jagged artifact problem common to Sandbox-only terrain.
Start with a flat rectangle or a simple curved surface generated by Follow Me or Curviloft. Group it. Run Smooth Subdivide twice to create a dense mesh.
Use the Sculpt brush with low strength to tent the surface upward at support points and let it drape between them — the model begins to look like a fabric or shell structure. Crease the edges at the support connections to keep those intersections sharp while the rest of the canopy stays soft.
Best for: Bioclimatic canopies, tensile membrane studies, green roof topography, and pavilion forms during schematic design. The geometry exports cleanly to Lumion and the organic mesh renders beautifully without additional UV work.
For interior design presentations, boxy furniture reads as placeholder content in a rendered scene. Artisan allows quick rounding of sofas, ottomans, and planter forms without importing heavy OBJ files from 3D Warehouse.
Model a box at the approximate dimensions of the furniture piece. Group it. Smooth Subdivide once. Use Crease Edges to keep the base flat. Sculpt the cushion crown and arm profiles with light Push/Pull brush strokes.
Pro tip: Save each rounded form as a component in your custom component library. A rounded cushion modeled once can serve as a base for dozens of furniture variations through scaling and minor edits.
Artisan's main risk is polygon bloat. A single Smooth Subdivide on a 100-face mesh produces 400 faces. Two passes: 1,600. Three passes: 6,400. On a complex model with multiple organic elements this can push file sizes into territory that makes every SketchUp operation sluggish.
Use the minimum subdivision level that gives acceptable smoothness at render distance. A terrain mound viewed at eye level needs more detail than a canopy seen from 50 meters.
Keep organic geometry in its own file or as a separate component. Reference heavy Artisan models into your main model file rather than modeling everything in the same scene.
Run Artisan's Reduce Polygons on flat areas before saving — the plugin is smart about where to remove geometry and where to keep it.
Do not model in the fully subdivided state. Keep a backup of the pre-subdivision geometry as a separate hidden group. It is faster to edit the lower-poly version and re-subdivide than to sculpt a highly subdivided mesh into a different shape.
When Artisan Is the Wrong Tool
Artisan is not the answer to every curved surface problem in SketchUp.
For parametric curved elements — curtain walls with specific panel sizes, railings with exact geometry, or profiles that repeat along a path — Follow Me and Curviloft are more appropriate. Artisan's sculpt-based workflow does not respect parametric constraints the way construction geometry needs to.
For high-fidelity organic forms that must be CNC milled or fabricated, Artisan output may need further cleanup in Blender or Rhino before fabrication data can be extracted. The mesh structure is not always clean enough for CAM workflows.
For simple corner rounding, Fredo6's RoundCorner plugin is faster and more precise than Artisan for chamfers and filleted edges on rectilinear forms.
How Artisan Fits Into the SketchUp + Lumion Pipeline
Artisan geometry exports to Lumion without issues. The subdivided mesh imports as-is via the SketchUp direct link or .skp file format, and Lumion's material system applies textures correctly to smooth surfaces.
One advantage of Artisan terrain over Lumion's built-in terrain tools: you control the mesh from SketchUp, where your site plan, building footprint, and landscape elements are already modeled. Sculpting in SketchUp and rendering in Lumion keeps the entire project coordinated in one place.
Best practice: Assign materials in SketchUp before rendering in Lumion. Lumion reads SketchUp's material names and allows replacement with Lumion's library — but only if the names are clean and consistent. Artisan surfaces accept SketchUp materials normally.
