Young people - multi-generational relationships

Julie · The year my last child leaves home (ps I'm a single parent)

I woke up yesterday with a realisation; when son leaves home, I will have substantially reduced contact with his generation.

I teach in a school still, but much less than I used to so there is a danger I will lose at least the little understanding I have of these younger generations.

I watch my dad, in his ninth decade, and his friends are of a similar age. Whilst this means they have the past in common, it also means that they are all more frail, ill and of course, one by one dying.

I remember my grandma expressing her sadness that all her old friends died before her. I can’t imagine having old friends die. Let alone siblings.

So it feels really important to me to find ways to keep building cross generational relationships. I don’t want to get stuck in the perspectives of my own generation, I want to maintain the broader perspective that multi-generational relationships bring.

I have it as a priority ‘note to self’.
