Today’s the day. It’s release day for The Housewives of Greensea Island. If you’ve written and published a book you know what it feels like. It’s strange. This thing you’ve been working on for more than a year is suddenly out in the world, being analyzed (and hopefully loved) by readers. And it’s all out of your control. It’s kind of like when your kids come home with lice.

Yes, I just said my book release is like when my kids had lice. Your precious babies, whom you’ve agonized over every aspect of their life—organic juice boxes, paraben-free shampoo, clothes without scratchy tags—walk in from school with bugs in their hair. So you painstakingly lather their hair with the natural method du jour and comb every living bug out of it. If you have multiple kids, you want to stick shower caps on everyone. And then the next day, you send them back into the world and hope one of those little suckers didn’t escape your attention and decide to announce its presence at the worst possible moment.

That’s exactly how release day feels.

I work so hard massaging the language, working with the best editors, and bringing in alpha and beta readers. I try to get as many eyes on my book as I can. And then I let it go.

When it goes out there into the real world and you can all see it, I hold my breath. Because now it’s on its own and I can’t protect the words and the characters that are part of my heart. But I still hope you love them—bugs and all.

Go get your copy and come see me tonight at Ty’s Wine and Brew at 6. There will be cookies, charcuterie, and prizes! Otherwise, I’d love to see you over the next few weeks on my tour of local bookstores in the Puget Sound.

xoxo,

julie
