Julia Samuel · The Therapy Works Substack

We’ve all had that moment.

The text is written. Your finger is hovering over send. Every part of you wants the other person to feel exactly what you’re feeling.

A few weeks ago, I found myself in exactly that position. I was furious. Every instinct told me to send the message that would really land, to make the other person feel what I was feeling.

In this week’s video, I share what happened next and why I believe one of the most important skills we can develop isn’t avoiding difficult emotions, but creating space between what we feel and what we choose to do.

I talk about the practical strategies that helped me resist the urge to react in the moment, why years of therapy have taught me the value of impulse control, and how neuroscience explains what happens in our brains when we’re overwhelmed by anger.

Anger isn’t the enemy. In fact, it often tells us something important. The challenge is allowing enough space for our wiser, more thoughtful selves to come back online before we act.

If you’ve ever regretted sending a message in the heat of the moment, I hope this week’s video gives you something to hold onto.

Love,
