I had a writing mentor once send back a piece of mine and say: IT’S NOT WEIRD ENOUGH YET.
And that sentence profoundly changed my craft.
In this writing workshop, we’re going to get weird. We’ll learn how to give our readers strange and ecstatic experiences. Details below!
Workshop for paid Substack subscribers
Tuesday | March 17th| 5pm PST
Defamiliarization, or “the art of making strange,” is a technique that empowers writers to see the world in fresh and unexpected ways. In this workshop, we’ll transform the boring into the bizarre and the ordinary into the wondrous. We’ll strange-make, shape-shift, and reimagine. We’ll identify the experiences we most want to write about and zap them with possibility.
Join me as we abandon familiar pastures and push into wilder, weirder territory. All genres welcome.
In the workshop, you’ll learn how to:
Flip clichés and give our readers ecstatic experiences
Transform traditional language by using vivid and strange expression
Disrupt automatic perception and invite startling fresh awareness
Limited seats so register early
