Go Look!

“And when it was already late, His disciples came up to Him and said, “This place is secluded and it is already late; send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!”

And they said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread, and give it to them to eat?” But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” (Mark 6:35-38 NASB emphasis added)

Natalie Renee here! I’m currently reading through Mark and this morning something really stood out to me that I wanted to share with you!

So, Jesus has been teaching this huge crowd. It’s grown late so obviously people are getting hungry. The disciples are like, “Send them home to go get supper!” but Jesus tells them to feed the people there instead.

The disciples are confused because it would take so much money to feed thousands of people. They were looking at how much it would cost, but they had no idea what had already been provided in the crowd.

Jesus then asks them, “How many loaves do you have?” and tells them to go look. Not just a guess or an estimate, but to really go look at what was already there.

Those two words really stuck out at me today, too. How many times am I asking God how He’s going to work something out before I’ve even looked at what He’s already provided?!

I need to go look at the family He’s provided. At the friends. I need to look at the resources, talents, skills that are already in my hand. Before freaking out at what I may be lacking, I need to go and see what’s already with me.

And then, if you keep reading in that chapter, you’ll see that once they bring what they find in the crowd to Jesus (five loaves and two fishes), He multiplies it!

The disciples didn’t need to find enough food to feed 5,000+ people. They did need to go looking for the blessings from the Lord that already existed.

So, let’s start our day taking a good long look at the loaves and fishes around us, and thank the Lord for the multiplying He can do with them!

We can also have confidence that when the Lord does the multiplying, it’s going to be so, so good! How do we know? Because we look back on true stories in Scripture like this one. We look back in our own lives and see the faithfulness of God.

That makes me think of my song, “Joy Is Coming.” Have you heard it yet? It’s a song celebrating the hope that we have that nights don’t last forever, goodness follows us, and He’s already been so gracious to us in the past.
