I know a good story when I hear one.

It’s Martin Sheen. After more than half a century as an actor, I know a thing or two about a good story.

Josh Turek, Iowa’s next U.S. Senator, has a story like no other.

I’ll get to that shortly. But first I have a message, not as an actor, but as a fellow patriot.

Most of you know me as President Bartlet from The West Wing. But many years before my term as TV president, I was in a film called Apocalypse Now.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, Apocalypse Now follows an American soldier on a journey up the rivers of Vietnam. It’s a story all about the horrors of a war that still affects us to this day.

The Turek family knows that firsthand.

Josh Turek’s father, John, joined the Navy on his 18th birthday. He served in Vietnam for 22 months, but the effects of war lingered with him long after he returned home.

His son, Josh, was born with spina bifida caused by Agent Orange exposure. Josh underwent 21 painful surgeries as a young boy, dealt with terrible bullying, and struggled to navigate life in a wheelchair.

Through sheer will, he became a celebrated athlete in wheelchair basketball, winning a scholarship, playing professionally, and even taking home two gold medals for Team USA at the Paralympics.

Next, Josh decided to give politics a shot. He served two successful terms in the Iowa State House before launching his United States Senate campaign last year.

Now, Josh is the Democratic nominee for the Senate seat currently held by Joni Ernst, and is tied with his Republican opponent in the polls.

That’s one heck of a story, don’t you agree?

Josh Turek has the resilience and strength to win Iowa. These qualities make him Democrats’ secret weapon in the fight for control of the Senate.
