John Simmons · John Simmons

About a year ago I was invited to visit Seville in Andalucia. The invitation came from my friend Alberto German, distinguished sculptor and professor of fine arts at Seville University. I’d got to know Alberto through many annual Dark Angels visits to Aracena, a little town close to Seville, where a conversation with Alberto at his studio was always a delight and a highlight.

Alberto had seen my poem Berliners and wanted me to be similarly inspired to write poetry about his city. So of course I was happy to oblige. I started writing poems about Seville before this latest visit, I took notes while I was there, I researched through books, then wrote many more poems on my return to London.

The bonus was that Alberto then illustrated my poems with his own beautiful watercolour illustrations. This made it irresistible to my publishers Paekakariki Press, and the printed booklet is being officially published this week.

The launch will be online at 18.30 (UK time) on Thursday 19 March. I’ll be in conversation with Alberto and with my fellow Dark Angels poets Therese Kieran and Tim Rich, hosted by Johnny Lyons, editor of the Dublin Review of Books. There will be readings mixed in with the chat.

Yes, you can come along for free, and you only need to register here https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/Ga3GJAzKRFmum7ACxptBPQ

You’ll then be sent a link to join on the night. Hope to see you then
