John Ricard · Timeless Wisdom

When most people hear the word trivium, they picture three stages of education.

Young children memorize facts in the Grammar Stage. Middle school students begin reasoning in the Logic Stage. High school students finally learn to express themselves in the Rhetoric Stage.

If you’ve spent any time around classical schools or homeschooling communities, you’ve probably encountered this model. It has become so influential that many people assume it is simply how classical education has always worked.

But the more I studied the history of classical education—and the more I taught students of every age—the more I began to wonder whether we have confused a helpful teaching strategy with the tradition itself.

This essay begins an exploration of a question I can no longer ignore:

What if the trivium was never about school grades in the first place?
