John Holsinger · Accidental Motivation

Today, I want to share some thoughts from my memoir, Accidental Motivation, particularly around the idea that you are unique, not special, and how your power lies in your uniqueness. This may seem like a subtle distinction, but it holds profound implications for how we view ourselves and our place in the world.

From a young age, many of us are told that we are special. Our parents, teachers, and society at large often reinforce this idea. While the intention behind this message is usually positive, aiming to build our self-esteem, it can sometimes lead to unrealistic expectations and a distorted sense of self-worth. The problem with being told we are special is that it implies a sense of superiority or exceptionalism that is not sustainable or realistic.

Specialness suggests that we are better than others in some way, that we deserve more, or that we are entitled to certain privileges. This mindset can lead to disappointment when reality does not match these inflated expectations. Moreover, it can create unnecessary pressure to live up to an ideal that is neither attainable nor healthy.

In contrast, recognizing our uniqueness is about acknowledging and celebrating the distinct combination of traits, experiences, and perspectives that make us who we are. Unlike the notion of specialness, which can be isolating and divisive, embracing our uniqueness fosters a sense of connection and belonging. It allows us to appreciate our individuality without feeling the need to compare ourselves to others.

Every one of us has a unique will—a concept I explore in my memoir, Accidental Motivation. Our unique will is shaped by our life experiences, knowledge, and interactions, making each of us distinct in our way. This uniqueness is not about being better or worse than anyone else; it is about being authentically ourselves.

Understanding and harnessing your unique will can be incredibly empowering. It means recognizing that while we may not have free will in the traditional sense, our responses and actions are shaped by our individual histories and contexts. This perspective can liberate us from the burden of trying to control everything and instead focus on what we can influence—our attitudes, responses, and actions.

For example, my journey of recovery after my bicycle accident taught me the importance of adaptability and acceptance. I learned that life is predetermined to a large extent, and instead of lamenting my circumstances, I chose to adapt and find happiness within the bounds of my situation.

In a diverse forest, each tree contributes to the ecosystem's overall health and stability. The variety of trees, each with different sizes, shapes, and types, ensures that the forest can adapt to changes and challenges. This diversity creates a robust and dynamic environment where all trees benefit from each other’s presence.

In contrast, a single tree standing alone is much more vulnerable. It does not benefit from the protection and support of a diverse forest. Without the shared resources and mutual support of the other trees, the single tree is likely to wither and die.

A community that values uniqueness is more resilient and adaptable. The diverse skills and perspectives within such a group enable it to navigate challenges more effectively. Just as a diverse forest can better withstand environmental threats, a community that values uniqueness can navigate social, economic, and personal challenges more effectively. This collective strength is less likely to be found in environments that single out individuals as special.

Your individuality is your superpower. It is what sets you apart and gives you a unique perspective on the world. By valuing and leveraging your uniqueness, you can make meaningful contributions to your personal and professional life. This does not mean that you should ignore the influence of others or societal norms, but rather, that you should integrate these influences in a way that remains true to who you are.

In my professional life, especially as a salesman, I realized that if I tried to sell like everyone else, I would be just another average salesman. However, when I leveraged my uniqueness—my specific strengths, experiences, and perspectives—that is when I truly shined. For instance, I utilized my deep understanding of technology, my ability to build genuine relationships, and my passion for solving customers' problems in innovative ways.

This concept is supported by research in organizational behavior and psychology. According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, individuals who leverage their unique strengths and characteristics in their work are more likely to experience higher job satisfaction and performance. This is because authenticity fosters a deeper connection with one's work and colleagues, leading to enhanced motivation and engagement.

Authenticity is a key component of leveraging your uniqueness. When you are authentic, you align your actions with your true self, creating consistency between your values and behavior. This authenticity resonates with others, building trust and credibility. In fact, a study by Harvard Business Review found that leaders who are authentic are more effective and have more engaged employees.

Authenticity also allows for genuine connections, both personally and professionally. When people see that you are genuine, they are more likely to trust and respect you, which can lead to more meaningful and productive relationships. This is particularly important in sales, where trust is a crucial factor in building and maintaining customer relationships.

Your unique combination of skills, perspectives, and experiences is your greatest asset. In any profession, these qualities enable you to approach problems and opportunities in novel ways. For example, in the tech industry, innovation often comes from individuals who see the world differently and are willing to challenge conventional thinking. Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, famously said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." Jobs' unique vision and approach to technology and design revolutionized the industry and set Apple apart from its competitors.

Similarly, in my career, I found that my deep understanding of technology and my ability to build genuine relationships allowed me to connect with customers on a deeper level. I wasn't just selling a product; I was offering solutions tailored to their specific needs and challenges. This personalized approach, rooted in my unique strengths and experiences, made all the difference.

Leveraging your uniqueness also contributes to the broader benefits of diversity. Diverse teams, where individuals bring different perspectives and strengths, are more innovative and effective. Research from McKinsey & Company shows that companies with diverse executive teams are more likely to outperform their peers on profitability. This is because diversity fosters creativity and innovation by bringing together a wide range of ideas and approaches.

To leverage your uniqueness effectively, consider the following steps:

  • Self-Reflection: Take the time to understand your strengths, values, and experiences. Reflect on what makes you unique and how these qualities can be applied in your personal and professional life.

  • Continuous Learning: Embrace a learning mindset. Stay open to new experiences and knowledge that can enhance your unique perspective.

  • Authenticity: Be true to yourself. Align your actions with your values and beliefs, and don't be afraid to express your true self.

  • Seek Feedback: Engage with trusted colleagues, mentors, and friends to gain insights into your unique strengths and areas for growth.

  • Embrace Diversity: Collaborate with people who have different perspectives and strengths. This will not only enhance your own growth but also contribute to more innovative and effective solutions.

By valuing and leveraging your uniqueness, you can make meaningful contributions to your personal and professional life. Your individuality is not just a trait; it is a powerful tool that can drive success and fulfillment. So, embrace what makes you unique and let it shine in everything you do.

Happiness is not a static destination but a dynamic journey. It is shaped by our unique experiences and the way we choose to respond to life's challenges. By focusing on what truly matters to us and aligning our actions with our values, we can create a fulfilling and meaningful life.

One of the key lessons I have learned is the importance of being honest with ourselves and others. Honesty simplifies life and allows us to build genuine relationships and make decisions that align with our true selves.

Another crucial aspect of happiness is maintaining a learning mindset. No matter how much we think we know, there is always room for growth and new perspectives. Embracing this mindset helps us stay open to new opportunities and resilient in the face of adversity.

Your existence has an impact on those around you and the broader tapestry of life. Recognizing this can help you appreciate the significance of your actions and the ripples you create in the lives of others. Whether it is through small acts of kindness, meaningful conversations, or larger contributions, your unique will influences the world in ways you may not even realize.

Finding peace and fulfillment often comes from embracing what makes us unique. By recognizing and celebrating our individuality, we can uncover true happiness and a deeper sense of purpose. Our power lies not in competing with others but in being authentically ourselves. This journey of self-discovery and acceptance is one of the most meaningful paths we can take.

Remember, you are unique, not special. And that is where your true power lies.

This article is inspired by the principles and experiences shared in my memoir, Accidental Motivation, where I delve deeper into the philosophy of Selfish Determinism and the pursuit of happiness in a deterministic universe.
