John Holsinger · Accidental Motivation

Over the past few months, I've been overwhelmed by the incredible responses to my memoir, Accidental Motivation. Your messages, comments, and questions have deeply touched me. One recurring theme in your feedback has been the quest for happiness—how to find it, sustain it, and navigate the complexities of life.

In my last Substack post, "Life is complex. Living is easy. Being happy is hard," I delved into the challenges of achieving happiness in our often-chaotic world. Your engagement with that post highlighted a shared desire to uncover the secrets to a happier life. Many of you reached out with questions about how you can apply the principles of my philosophy to your own lives.

Motivated by your curiosity and a desire to take my message further, I will be starting a series of talks focused on my philosophy of Selfish Determinism and the pursuit of happiness. This philosophy, born from my own life-changing experiences, posits that while our paths may be determined by various factors, we have the unique will to find joy and fulfillment within those predetermined circumstances.

In these talks, I will share practical insights and actionable steps to help you embrace Selfish Determinism, prioritize your well-being, and cultivate happiness in your daily lives.

Appended below is the first draft of my talk, which will be submitted to the Texas Speakers Bureau. I welcome your comments and feedback in the comments section below or directly via text or email. Thank you.

Good morning, everyone. Thank you for being here today. My name is John Holsinger, and I’m here to talk about a journey we all share—the pursuit of happiness.

Seven years ago, I experienced a life-changing event. A traumatic bicycle accident left me questioning everything I thought I knew about control, happiness, and purpose. This led me to develop a philosophy I call "Selfish Determinism." Have you ever wondered if every choice you make is already determined? Today, I'll share how this philosophy can help us navigate our lives and find true happiness.

Let’s start with a thought experiment. Imagine you’re at a crossroads. Each path represents a different choice, but what if I told you that the path you take is already determined by countless factors? Determinism is the idea that all events, including human actions, are determined by causes external to the will. Some people find this concept unsettling because it implies that we don't have free will. However, embracing determinism can actually bring a sense of peace and empowerment. It allows us to accept that some things are beyond our control and focus our energy on what we can influence.

When I accepted that my accident was a result of various factors beyond my control, I stopped feeling like a victim. Instead, I focused on how I could respond to my new reality and find happiness despite it.

Now let's talk about selfishness. I don't mean the kind of selfishness that disregards others, but a healthy form of selfishness where you prioritize your own well-being. Think of the airplane safety instructions: “Put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.” To be truly happy, you must take care of yourself first. This means setting boundaries, pursuing your passions, and ensuring your own needs are met. By doing so, you can better support and enrich the lives of those around you.

After my accident, I realized I needed to focus on my recovery and mental health. I learned to say no to things that drained me and yes to activities and people that brought me joy. This shift in focus helped me rebuild my life and find happiness again.

One of the most important lessons I learned is the importance of living in the present moment. Happiness isn't something we achieve once and for all; it's something we experience in small, everyday moments. For example, during my recovery, I found joy in simple things like feeling the warmth of a sunny day, getting lost in a captivating book, or enjoying a heartfelt conversation with a friend. These moments of joy helped me stay positive and motivated.

We can't control what happens to us, but the influence of this awareness changes how we respond. This is crucial in making the most of our predetermined circumstances. My accident was a turning point, but instead of letting it define me negatively, I used it as an opportunity for growth. By focusing on my rehabilitation and adopting a positive mindset, I turned a challenging situation into a journey of self-discovery and happiness. We all have the power to do this, no matter our circumstances.

Changing our behavior and mindset can significantly impact our happiness. I found several techniques helpful. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage and motivate you. Celebrate small wins and progress to keep yourself motivated and positive. Keep track of your journey and reflect on how far you've come.

During my physical therapy, I set small, achievable goals and celebrated each milestone, which kept me motivated and focused on my recovery. Consider setting up your own habit loop: cue, routine, reward. If you want to exercise more, set a cue like laying out workout clothes, follow through with the routine, and reward yourself with something enjoyable.

Social connections play a vital role in our happiness. During my recovery, the support of my family and friends was invaluable. They provided not only physical assistance but also emotional support, which was crucial for my mental well-being. The Harvard Study of Adult Development 2023 (The Harvard Gazette) shows that quality relationships keep us happier and healthier. Nurture your relationships and seek out positive, supportive people. They can make a significant difference in your happiness journey.

Setbacks are inevitable, but how we handle them defines our journey. Resilience and a positive outlook are key. Resilience involves adaptability, optimism, and staying focused on goals despite challenges. Practice positive reframing—see failures as learning opportunities. Maintain perspective, develop coping strategies, and seek support when needed. When faced with setbacks, I reminded myself of my progress and focused on what I could control. For example, after a particularly tough day of therapy, I would reflect on my achievements and remind myself that each step, no matter how small, was progress. This mindset helped me stay resilient and motivated.

Self-reflection leads to personal growth and a deeper understanding of yourself. Engage in daily journaling, mindful meditation, and therapeutic conversations to facilitate self-reflection and growth. During my recovery, journaling helped me track progress and process emotions.

A sense of purpose is fundamental to happiness, providing meaning and direction. Imagine if our ultimate purpose was simply to be happy. Selfish Determinism suggests that by intensely focusing on being the best in our chosen roles—whether as a spouse, parent, teacher, coach, or professional—we can achieve fulfillment. Identify your passions, set meaningful goals, and commit fully to your pursuits. Purpose-driven individuals experience greater well-being and life satisfaction, transforming everyday tasks into fulfilling endeavors and enhancing overall happiness.

Integrate the philosophy of Selfish Determinism into your daily life. Practice acceptance, self-care, present-moment awareness, and purposeful living. Start your day with mindfulness, make intentional choices, and end with reflection and self-compassion.

Happiness is a journey influenced by how we respond to life’s events. Embrace determinism, practice healthy selfishness, find joy in the present, make the most of your circumstances, and nurture social connections. Happiness is within reach for all of us. It’s about making the most of what we have and finding joy in the journey. Thank you for listening, and I hope you feel inspired to pursue your path to happiness. Embrace the journey, cherish the moments, and remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is a step towards a happier life.
