The Two Pillars to Profitability

Joey Albertson · The Profitability Project

I have a visceral reaction to saying this on the internet. It’s genuinely uncomfortable for me. But I can’t not say it anymore.

There are two pillars to profitability. The first has nothing to do with your numbers.

Pillar one is money mindset. Pillar two is financial mechanics — the numbers, the systems, the actual technical work of running a financially sound business.

Everybody wants to start with pillar two. Including me, if I’m honest. I love financial mechanics. I’ve built an entire career around them. Margins, cash flow, tax strategy, the systems that make a business run — that’s the part of this work that feels the most like “real” accounting, the part I was actually trained for.

Here’s the problem: Ninety-nine percent of the problems my clients face don’t come down to a missing spreadsheet or an unlearned skill. They come down to four different reactions people have to a financial event — revenue dropping, a surprise tax bill, whatever the trigger happens to be. And financial mechanics, no matter how good they are, never respond to those reactions. They don’t help anyone actually move through them.

I jokingly call this “financial therapy.” Most days it genuinely feels like I’m talking about things I was never formally trained to talk about. It’s a little shocking, honestly, how far outside the boundaries of traditional accounting this work goes — and how necessary it turns out to be anyway.

I want to be abundantly clear about something, because I don’t want this to read as “numbers don’t matter, just work on your feelings.” That’s not it at all.

We have to understand your numbers. Your margins. What’s happening in your market, in your specific space. That work is real, it’s required, and no amount of mindset work replaces it. Pillar two isn’t optional. It’s not lesser. It’s genuinely half of the equation.

But it’s step two.

If you’re attempting to start with step two — going straight to the numbers, the systems, the mechanics, without ever addressing the four reactions sitting underneath how you actually respond to your financial reality — you will never reach profitability.

I’m sorry. I really am. I know that’s not what anyone wants to hear from an accountant, and it’s certainly not the easy thing for me to say as someone who has spent a career getting really good at pillar two specifically. But I’ve watched it play out too many times to keep pretending otherwise. The mechanics can be flawless, and if pillar one was never addressed, they don’t stick.

Pillar one first. Then pillar two. That’s the order that actually gets you there.
