The wilderness is often viewed as a sacred space where we are tested, refined, and drawn closer to God. In biblical accounts, the desert wilderness is where many of our Saints sought inspiration.
It is also seen as a place to hear God’s voice in the silence. Spiritually, the “wilderness” often symbolizes hardship, waiting, peace, and dependence on God.
Everyone feels hunger in their hearts. How many of us seek remote wildernesses, quiet lakeside settings, hikes through the rich green forests, the open expanse of deserts, or visits to national parks? We are always feeling this hunger for God and peace.
Whether we visit a natural setting and experience silence and solitude for just an hour, don’t we feel rejuvenated and refreshed? We absolutely do!
Nonetheless, God always reveals His love for us in the world around us. Whether we are in nature, hearing the flutter of a sparrow’s wings, observing a mother caring for her child, or reading the Gospel, we can find expressions of His love. There will always be someone or something that reflects His love.
However, God still draws us into a place of silence and solitude, where we aren’t distracted, so we can hear His whisper in our hearts: “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.” Hosea 2:14
Although He was speaking of Israel, this scripture can apply to any one of us, since “her” refers to everyone’s souls, according to our Saints.
