Joanna Penn Cooper · Muse with JPC

Hi, all!

I hope everyone’s August is going smoothly. I’m longing for fall and enjoying taking note of the small changes in light and shadow in the meantime.

I’ve just put up the Fall courses for Muse, and I wanted to share them here.

Keep reading below for everything I’m teaching August through December 2026!

The Muse Incubator is a bundled offering for women who want regularly scheduled writing support and continuous community. During your time working alongside the group, you can choose to work toward a specific goal—such as drafting an essay or a chunk of a book manuscript—or you can use the workshops and community as a place to rest and reset through creativity.

Participants can pay for the four-month package or the yearly package. (And I will open it up for purchase every few months, so you can always choose the four-month package, and then re-up again for spring, should you decide to do so.)

The Muse Incubator for this upcoming season includes the following bundled offerings:

  • Monthly Generative Workshops (September-December, 2026; $200 value)

  • One special topics workshop in October ($75 value)

  • 30% discount on 30 Days of Flash Memoir (up to a $105 value)

  • Weekly group work sessions (no prompts or sharing— just writing!)

  • Access to recordings of all the workshops for times you can’t make it live

  • Access to Muse Facebook group to connect with the cohort

  • The option of one response per month (line editing and/or developmental editing) on up to 2,500 words / 10 pages of writing x 4 months ($500 value)

[Note: This option must be redeemed within September October, November and December 2026. The editing offer does not carry over past December.]

Cost: $400, payment plans available

If you buy the Yearly Option, you get generative workshops September 2026-July 2027 (with a break in August); discounts on two asynchronous courses (‘30 Days of Flash Memoir’ and ‘Lyric Essay 2.0’); four seasonal “special topics” generative workshops, along with the other offerings above. The cost is $1,000 (with available payment plans).

Transform your personal experiences into art, exploring memory, identity, and the moments that shape us. Each day, we’ll do short readings and exercises designed to loosen us up, access our creativity and writing voice, and jump start a writing practice.

You will emerge from the class with a portfolio of autobiographical vignettes (also known as flash essays or flash memoir pieces). You can use the writing in the class as material toward longer essays or simply as a way to reconnect with creative flow. And, of course, you could also polish up some of the pieces and send them off to literary magazines as flash memoir.

In this asynchronous workshop, we will aim to write every day. We’ll spread out the writing over six weeks, with six weekly lessons that include five prompts each.

Course opens September 26th

Cost: $350 $300 early bird price through Sept. 1st.

[Note: Muse Incubator participants also receive 30% off this course.]

With these workshops, you have the option of dropping in to a series of generative workshops over five months, on the second Saturday of the month. During each session, I will provide prompts and model readings, and we’ll do timed writing exercises together. I ask for 1-2 volunteers to read their work after each exercise, but volunteering is completely optional.

What I offer is a container for community and creative exploration. I won’t be able to offer makeup sessions, but I will send all prompts and materials to the group after we meet.

Dates: Second Saturday of the Month (Sept. 12th, Oct. 10th, Nov. 14th, Dec. 12th)
Times: 1:00-3:00 Eastern Time

Cost: $50 per session (20% discount for paid subscribers to my Substack; message me for discount code!)

Please note: This is included in The Muse Incubator Bundle. No need to purchase individual sessions if you join the Incubator.

Each session is limited to 14 Participants

About my most recent special topic generative workshop, Estranging the Familiar, returning participant Mendy Knott wrote:

I so enjoyed your class, both you and the participants, at yesterday’s Estranging the Familiar. I sink into your classes like a warm bath on a cold winter day. Somehow, your relaxed style, and simply being yourself, and really asking this and only this of your students, too, allows a lot of space to practice weirdness. There is a particular joy and freedom, an upward and outward trajectory of the writer as artist, that serve as the honeyed center of joy in art.

I feel that playful energy pour out of me, not just in the words that emerge, but engaging my whole body.

I thank you Joanna, for your always reasonably priced, and comfortably ecstatic, classes. I hope people read this comment and take note. Your classes are an excellent way to be with the artist in yourself, be inspired by others, and to spend a Saturday afternoon. It’s a long float on an accommodating raft down a slow river.

Finally, my next class with writers.com opens tomorrow, Wednesday August 19th!

In this course, we will explore the memories and scenes you feel called to put a frame around, examining how life’s everyday details reveal larger patterns, questions, and emotional truths. In a series of flash nonfiction pieces, you’ll learn how to approach these moments as doorways into deeper self-understanding. As you delve into the writerly techniques that provide new shape to past experiences, you’ll begin to see how craft can help you care for and make meaning from the material of your own life.

This five-week class opens August 19th.

Cost: $395
