I’m going to make a pitch.
I’ve never done this. I like to offer my concerts for everyone, and though I ask for donation love offerings, I don’t charge admission. So kind of like Public Radio and PBS, I greatly appreciate the support I’ve gotten, and it keeps me doing my monthly concerts that I think I do just to be out there for whomever, not so much for money. I sometimes feel it’s like running for office. Campaign costs a lot.
I’m going to ask for monetary support. Touring means putting out so much money ahead of time, buying plane tickets, other travel, rental cars, motels (I try not to do that much) and buying inventory to sell, not to mention promotional expense, and the fact that I work many hours a week for no salary, selling myself. Then I could mention composing - most everything I write I do for no hourly wage, and it’s lots of hours.
Lately, I’ve moved across the country and a “sequence of events” have me in a place where I will mention:

Just an example of how things go - I don’t have the Oneness of Everything t-shirt right now. My first order of them disappeared in a few months. People have loved them. If I had a lot of money to invest, I’d buy a big supply, but the beautiful image is very expensive and one needs to buy a lot of shirts, like over 100, to bring the price down to making it something I can sell at an affordable price. Same with printing books, but that’s a little less daunting a price. They are not big profit items however.
I have been working on the idea of becoming a non-profit, or having a non-profit 501-C3 arm of the business where we get grants for projects. I have 6 friends who are willing to be the board. I registered with the State of MA, but now have moved to CA. The IRS part is a lot more of a deal and expense than the state part. I got an NEA grant to make my “Year to Save the Earth” concert, and I’ve gotten grants for projects, but have needed a “fiscal sponsor”. I really need to hire an administrator - that could be also supported by a grant for that matter. So all that is complicated, but I know friends get the idea. I’m honored and humbled that so many people think I’m doing good in the world, I’m far from perfect, but we try.
