I vividly remember the back to school seasons of my youth. Loading up to buy our new clothes for the year at Nordstrom. Asking to wear Limited Too one year, to shop from the Delia’s catalog the next, begging to be able to wear Abercrombie the year after that. I loved highlighting my printed school supply lists, laying out my first day of school outfit weeks in advance. The back to school relaxer burning my scalp, dreaming of all the possibilities for the year ahead. How would I tweak my personality to be cuter? Funnier? It just felt like the world started over—the true New Year’s Day.

Long after I graduated college, I still found myself with butterflies in my stomach as August came tiptoeing its way me. I was giddy with excitement for football and chili and lightweight cardigans, for pumpkin patches and pencil shavings and the change of routine. But something has changed in the past few years. Near the end of July, I start feeling a palpable nausea and dread that slowly, steadily becomes debilitating and after a few weeks of reflection, I finally understand why.
