Ah! Is it a thriller?

Hello, everyone! Earlier this month, I signed the contract to write my forthcoming book: Everyday Graphic Design Writing: Letters, Blogs, and the Making of Communities (Bloomsbury). I’m thrilled and anxious and curious, all at the same time. And so this summer, I’m writing and also falling into an academic slumber.

Just after I plopped my signature into DocuSign, I mentioned My Big News to a few friends and colleagues who chatted with me on the sidewalk or in coffee shops. Since those conversations revealed a lot about the project at this stage, I thought I’d share snippets of them here (names omitted to protect friendships):

Ah! Is it a thriller?
— Maybe. There’s a surprise ending.
Yeah, okay, I’d buy that.
— I mean, it’s non-fiction with some really interesting connections and discoveries…
{Politely changes conversation}

— Nope. I’d like to do that next, though!
{Look of disappointment, attention turns to cute dog}

Very cool. So you’ll be needing an extra few shots of espresso in that, then?
— Definitely.

— ♡

Make sure you hire your own copyeditor. Just, like, hire a grad student or friend or something. You’ll have errors all over the place.
— Noted
You’ve got to write every single goddamn day. Seriously.
— Okay, but…
And find someone reputable to index it ’cause you don’t want that fucked up.
