Over the past three years, I’d interviewed dozens of dermatologists. Because I am skeptical of all things, and especially digital-age hucksters, whenever I could, I sought out anonymous medical normies, those who were not doctor-influencers/green-screen heads pointing fingers at #sponsored products they “recommend” after being paid to recommend them. Despite what social media/SkinTok would have you believe, most non-social-media-star dermatologists are fairly boring and at the very least predictable — even when pressed, they almost always recommend the same things. Most do not actually believe you need loads of skincare products, and that whatever you do buy should not cost a ton.
There are exceptions, of course. Peptide serums (I have a bigger story coming on these), growth factor serums, and — up until recently — vitamin C all require a bit of a spend to avoid snake-oil trash. But the one skincare category derms always suggested would be worth splashing out on that surprised me — because I think of this as the most generic/regulated product around — is sunscreen. In fact, they always recommended THE EXACT SAME SUNSCREEN.
After finally caving, buying it with my own $$, and using it for the last few months, I completely understand why. Even if you’ve heard of this product before (you have), I am going to tell you the exact reasons it’s actually superior and worth your cash.
