This evening, as it was moving into dusk, I saw Mama Mama and Grandma Grandma browsing behind our home. I went to the refrigerator and found the wrinkled apple, past its prime that I had noticed yesterday. I took a knife sliced chunks of creamy colored flesh, not quite crisp with red speckled skin. I threw each deer a piece and then two and three. They nosed through the grass, chewed open mouthed happily, while I, stood and looked up at the tall fir trees against the sky and felt the peace I often miss as I slowly move through the work of the day.
