Total eclipse of rational thought

Hello!

Here’s a new cartoon. If you were here yesterday for the rough sketch you’ll see how the final has changed. As much as I prefer to draw cartoons with few or no words, there is such a thing as being too subtle. And for this one, I felt I had to land the joke—or at least that first word balloon—a bit more on the nose, you might say. To really drive it home, you know?

Anyway, as you may have heard, a solar eclipse is on the way for tomorrow—Wednesday.

And considering that editors need to work ahead, I’m sending this into the world today so for possibly publication on Wednesday or even after. The way I’ve designed this cartoon it will still be relevant after the eclipse, which makes it more marketable.

A bit more on this idea: when coming up with ideas I will often riff off some visual aspect of a thing that I find interesting. For me, eclipse glasses, for whatever reason, are interesting. They’re sort of like old-school 3D glasses, although completely different. So let’s just say, please don’t mix them up.

On another note, if you Google “Solar Eclipse,” it’s kind of a fun thing to see what happens (no spoilers here). At least this fun thing happened for me--assuming it’ll work for you, too. Let me know!

Thank you for your sustaining support of my human-made creativity, journalism, and satire.

Oh, and if you watch the eclipse, make sure to wear your special glasses!
