I was telling my 12-year old a story the other day about something or another -- I honestly don’t remember what the story was, whaddya gonna do, I’m old -- when I mentioned “something-something 1979” and she said, “1979 is so long ago.”
I, of course, was offended, as 1979 was most certainly not “so long ago.”
In fact, 1979 was practically yesterday. Knee-high athletic socks, the Pittsburgh Pirates “We Are a Family” team, the Cowboys and Steelers ruling the NFL.
It was cassette tapes and five channels and shag carpeting and … OK fine, maybe it was “so long ago” but really: No. No it’s not. How can any time that I remember so clearly be “so long ago” to a 12-year-old?
And then I did the math.
I wish I did not do the math.
She was born in 2013, meaning 1979 was 34 years from her birth. That’s a lot of time.
I was born in 1971. When I subtract 34 years from 1971, we end up in … 1937.
