Chiefs injuries make for preseason opportunities vs. Bucs

Even if Ashton Gillotte is active for Week 1 of the regular season, I can’t help but be concerned about the exact issues we discussed all offseason.

Now that KC’s presumed No. 2 defensive end has suffered a ruptured plantar fascia—ouch—it feels like Gillotte’s path to a breakout second season is at least a bit more challenging.

Meanwhile, Felix Anudike-Uzomah would probably be in line to start in Gillotte’s absence, while R Mason Thomas may still have to prove that he’s ready for a full workload at the pro level in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. Alternatively, is recently signed veteran Emmanuel Ogbah a reasonable option for serious snaps?

On the other side of the trenches, we know we won’t see Josh Simmons or Trey Smith on Saturday night in Tampa. I’d love to see a larger workload for undrafted tackle Kahlil Benson, while anything positive from the rest of the backup O-line would be encouraging after a tough preseason opener for many of the second- and third-teamers.
