Weathering the Storm: Lessons From a Chaotic Spring

Sunshine one minute. Torrential rain the next. Thunder overhead, wind at your back, then back to sun again. This is what spring 2025 looked like here in the UK (although we’ve had a good, sunny run more recently) — and honestly, it feels like a pretty good metaphor for life.

One minute you feel clear, capable, productive. The next you’re overwhelmed, thrown off, spinning in a whirlwind of emotional or physical noise. Maybe it’s illness. Maybe it’s stress. Maybe it’s just the relentless unpredictability of modern life.

But you don’t need to be ready for everything. You just need to be ready enough.

We often get caught in the trap of waiting for a perfect window: the calm conditions, the smooth day, the right mindset. But most of life doesn’t work that way. Like the weather this spring, our circumstances change fast, and usually without asking permission.

You can either:

  • Fight for control and burn out

  • Or build the capacity to bend without breaking

That’s where functional resilience comes in. Not as a fixed routine or bulletproof mindset, but as a dynamic buffer — a way of being that absorbs disruption and still keeps going.

Here’s what’s helped me stay steady lately, even when the skies opened up:

  • Adaptable Systems: If it rains, I move the workout inside. If the power cuts, we have head torches and food that doesn’t need cooking (or we have a camping stove). The plan can change because the principles are stable.

  • Mood-Proof Habits: A five-minute stretch. A short walk. A litre of water. These don’t rely on motivation, they rely on being accessible. I don’t always feel like it. But they always help.

  • Low-Ego Flexibility: I’m learning (still!) not to take disruption personally. The weather doesn’t care about my plans. Life doesn’t either. That’s not a failure. That’s just... reality.

  • Getting Outside Anyway: I’ve been out in the garden between storms. I’ve sat in drizzle with a mug of coffee. Not to be hardcore (I have other ways to do that 🤘🏼), just to remind myself that I can exist in all conditions, not just the good ones.

Functional Resilience isn’t about being endlessly productive or keeping your feelings to yourself.

It’s about:

  • Having room in your schedule, systems, and body to adapt.

  • Knowing that disruption doesn’t mean defeat.

  • Letting go of the illusion that stability = control.

This applies whether we’re talking about weather, health, parenting, finances, or mental wellbeing.

You can’t forecast life accurately. But you can build a stronger shelter.

What’s been your version of the thunderstorm lately?

What helps you ride it out instead of waiting for it to pass?
