Writing has always been cathartic for me. Vlogging is therapeutic in a different way because I can hear myself, see myself on the screen, and it serves more like a confessional for being so instantaneous and verbal.

But writing requires quiet. Both take time and effort, dedication and a willingness to look and feel like an idiot. But writing, and by extension, reading, require energy by way of imagination that video undercuts through its very nature. Metaphor can be conveyed in film, but is co-created with the reader on the page.

I leaned heavily into metaphor in Sea of the Unknown, the title itself the metaphor. So much of my life was spent wishing I was somewhere else. That ‘somewhere else’ was always France, as long as I can remember, but it was so many other things. It was being creative. It was being free. Loved.

The last book, Sea of The Unknown details the journey of how I arrived in France.

None of these desires had defined outlines, let alone fully-resolved images within them. What did France even look like? I would wind up falling in love specifically with Paris. Being creative? Kid Jay set out to be a movie director and found Adult Jay to be an author and vlogger instead. And freedom? Love? Well, those might be for the next bookread more

That’s me, exactly nine years ago when I finally arrived in Paris.

But in Sea of the Unknown, I took the time to detail that fight for what I believed in. Namely, what I believed in was me. It just took a lot of failed attempts at France, at creativity, and under it all, at a sense of personal freedom to really prove it out. Sometimes no one else can see what you can. Maybe that’s how all dreams start, as only visible to ourselves. And so it’s up to us to scrounge what driftwood we can, lash together a raft, and launch ourselves from the Shores of the Known to venture across the Sea of the Unknown.
