I did not expect to find lost stories by writers well known in the field, and was thus delighted to find a previously unreprinted story by E. F. Benson, one of the greats of the supernatural. Some may also recognise the names of F. Britten Austin and Guy Thorne, popular in their day for their unusual and often daring fiction. But most of these writers have been unjustly forgotten even though some, such as Elsie Norris, Huan Mee, James Barr, Lumley Deakin and Philippa Forest, wrote quite a few weird tales—and, in the case of Jack Edwards, many.
