Distraction as a Blessing

Jay Darvishian · Wanderings of the Mind

My mind is preoccupied with too many estranged thoughts to be creative. At least that’s what I think. Do I really need to be engaged with creative thoughts to be my most creative self? Are these estranged thoughts actually a benefit to my creative side?

If I’m caught up thinking about whether I expressed my coffee order with the right tone so the barista feels valued and I’m not being rude, are these thoughts taking away from what I’d rather be thinking about?

The most creative thoughts I have occur when I’m least thinking about the thing I’m supposed to be creating. When I’m more occupied with whether the person I like noticed the oil mark on my shirt when we walked by each other in the corridor of an event where they probably didn’t even realize I was there.

Is my worrying over random details assisting in figuring out important details for that project I’m supposed to be working on instead of worrying that my house has a vague smell of weed from the neighbor upstairs who doesn’t bat an eye at my existence?

Visual representation of thought

Does the awkwardly placed tile even realize that I stay up at night thinking that maybe I should have explained myself differently to the receptionist at the dentist when I wanted to book an appointment? Probably not. I am always thinking about everything, and all of a sudden a tiny little idea pops into my mind about that thing I am working on. This is the blessing of the mind and the part where I never get bored with my work.

I have no idea how this all happens, but it does, and consistently. I have learned to never panic when trying to figure out ideas—they eventually appear out of thin air in the mind, even when the mind is totally obsessed with a clap in the new song by my new favorite artist.

I love what I do. Anyway, let it be a fruitful year of wonderful ideas and wandering thoughts of unrelated stuff.

God bless.
