A Corridor Into the World

Gazing into a corridor, our eyes tend to fixate on the central piece. The goal, the objective, the destination — that’s what we’re drawn toward. But what if we steered away from the goal and travelled down the corridor without a destination?

Looking through recently captured images, I noticed a pattern: corridors, pathways toward something. Seeing them, I decided to look to the sides — moving away from the focal point and from what these corridors hold. These pathways can reveal much more about an image than the centre of attention.

What happens when we stop focusing on the thing demanding our attention and instead take note of the periphery? What can we learn from the sidestars orbiting the mainstar? I believe there is much to learn if we shift our focus to what lies on the fringes. We can understand far more about a solar system by analysing what moves around the sun.

The sun is always attractive and shines brightly, but what’s happening around it is where the real interest lies. Earth is a prime example — what’s happening on Earth is far more fascinating than what’s happening on the sun.

A good corridor creates many interesting destinations, each filled with details that give the whole its meaning and uniqueness. The more we look into these peripheries, the more we can learn. Just look at a person’s orbit — who are their friends? What are their interests? What items do they keep in their spaces? Looking at these details can tell us much more about a person than simply looking at them.

Take the following scene: apart from the obvious — big buildings at golden hour — we can see a bit of traffic. This suggests it’s possibly rush hour, and the flow appears to be moving away from the commercial centre (the tall buildings), which tells us it’s most likely home time. We could make a similar analysis of the sky and reveal even more about what’s going on.

Being human, and always hypnotised by golden hour, I captured this corridor unintentionally. But what would happen if I started capturing corridors intentionally?
