In 1882 Nietzsche claimed that the dominant paradigm in Western society at the time, the existence of the Christian God and the guidelines for morality stemming from Christian tradition can no longer be justified. And went to shock the world (or at least the 7 people that used to read him at the time) and claimed that God is dead. So let me paraphrase him and try to be as flippant and outrageous…
The internet was supposed to create a generation of geniuses. For the first time in history, all of human knowledge was available to anyone with an internet connection. Every textbook, every lecture, every research paper, every how to guide. Most of it free. Available to anyone in the world.
The brief 300-year experiment in human freedom that began in the enlightenment is unfortunately ending. It’s worth remembering what came before, so we can predict what will come after. History doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes.
For many decades the standard benchmark that researchers used to evaluate whether a computer program was intelligent or not was the Turing Test. The test was very simple, a person and someone else (a computer or another person) would sit at both ends of a screen and would interact with each other via messages. Who wouldn’t want to live a longer, healthier life? As it turns out not everybody is interested in longevity, but society as a whole is waking up to the idea that we could fine tune our bodies lo live longer that we normally would.
When I think of AI capabilities I tend to classify them in two. First, doing things that are impossible for humans. Second, doing things that humans can do, but faster or cheaper.
