I sent 850 job applications over 18 months.
Zero offers.
Not one callback that led anywhere. Not one interview that resulted in “we’d like to move forward.” Not one hiring manager who looked at my decades of experience and thought “this person could help us.”
Just silence. Or worse, automated rejections that started with “Thank you for your interest” and ended with “we’ve decided to move forward with other candidates.”
At 57, the job market told me I was done.
Too old. Too expensive. Too experienced. Not a “culture fit.”
I could keep sending applications and hoping I’d be the exception. Or I could accept that the system wasn’t going to save me and build something it couldn’t reject.
I chose the second path.
And now I’m building a movement for everyone else the job market betrayed.
It’s called The Unfireables.
This is why it exists, what it does, and why it matters.
The job market is broken for workers over 40.
Not struggling. Not challenging. Broken.
64% of workers over 50 have experienced age discrimination in the workplace. The average job posting gets 250+ applications but only 4-6 interviews. After 90 days unemployed, your chances of getting hired drop so dramatically it’s been called a “death sentence.”
And the solutions offered by workforce development programs? Resume optimization. Interview skills. Networking tactics.
All useful if the system is working. All useless if the system has already decided you’re too old to hire.
Here’s what they don’t tell you: You can have the perfect resume, nail every interview question, and network until your LinkedIn connection requests get ignored, and it won’t matter if the hiring manager took one look at your graduation date and moved on.
I know because I did all of it.
I optimized my resume. I practiced interview answers. I reached out to my network. I applied to jobs I was overqualified for, jobs I was perfectly qualified for, jobs I could grow into.
850 times.
And the market said no every single time.
Not because I wasn’t good enough. Because I was 57 and the system is designed to filter people like me out before we ever get a chance.
Here’s what nobody talks about when they’re giving you job search advice:
Bills don’t stop because you’re unemployed.
Your family still needs to eat. Rent is still due. The car still breaks down. Medical bills still arrive. Credit card minimums still have to be paid.
And every month you go without income, the hole gets deeper.
You start using credit cards for groceries. You borrow from family. You sell things. You skip meals to stretch the budget. You lie awake at 3am doing math that doesn’t work no matter how many times you run it.
And the whole time, people tell you to “stay positive” and “keep trying” and “something will come through.”
But nothing does.
Because the system that’s supposed to reward hard work and experience has decided you’re disposable.
So what do you do?
Most people keep sending applications. Keep hoping. Keep believing that if they just try hard enough, the system will eventually say yes.
I did that for 8 months.
And then I realized: the system isn’t going to save me. So I need to build something it can’t reject.
The Unfireables started as an idea born from desperation.
If the job market won’t hire me, how do I generate income without needing corporate approval?
I started writing on Medium. I built a freelance ghostwriting practice. I launched coaching. I created courses. I turned my 850 rejections into content that helped other people who were going through the same thing.
I built seven different income streams. Some months I make $5,500. Some months I make $1,650. It’s not stable. It’s not easy. But it’s mine.
And nobody can fire me from it.
While I was building, I started a free community called Over 40 and Unemployed. A place for people who’d been chewed up and spit out by the job market to find support, resources, and proof that there’s another way.
It grew to 750+ members in six months. No paid ads. No marketing budget. Just word of mouth from people who were desperate for a place that understood what they were going through.
And I realized: this isn’t just my story. This is millions of people’s story.
Workers over 40 who’ve been systematically rejected. People with decades of experience told they’re overqualified. Anyone who’s realized the promise of “work hard and you’ll succeed” was a lie.
They don’t need another resume workshop. They need a different path.
That’s what The Unfireables is.
The Unfireables is three things:
1. A community where you can stop pretending.
You don’t have to say you’re “doing great” when you’re barely surviving. You don’t have to perform optimism when you’re terrified. You don’t have to pretend 850 rejections didn’t break something in you.
This is a place where you can be honest about how hard it is. Where other people who’ve been there will tell you “me too” instead of “have you tried networking?”
Because the loneliest part of unemployment isn’t the lack of income. It’s the isolation. The feeling that everyone else has it figured out and you’re the only one failing.
The Unfireables is proof you’re not alone.
2. A framework for building income without corporate approval.
We teach The Great Pivot: how to build multiple income streams in 90 days.
Not theory. Not “follow your passion and the money will come.” Real, tactical income generation that works when you’re broke, desperate, and can’t wait years for something to pay off.
Freelancing. Content creation. Consulting. Digital products. Service businesses. Coaching. Whatever fits your skills and situation.
The goal isn’t to make you rich. It’s to get you from $0 to $500, then $500 to $1,000, then $1,000 to $2,000.
Small wins that prove you can generate income without needing HR to say yes.
Because once you make your first dollar outside traditional employment, something shifts. You realize you’re not powerless. You’re just playing the wrong game.
3. An advocacy movement that creates real opportunities.
The Unfireables isn’t just about helping individuals survive. It’s about changing the system.
We’re building partnerships with workforce development organizations, community colleges, AARP, Goodwill Industries, corporate outplacement programs.
We’re proving that teaching income generation works better than teaching job search tactics when the hiring system is rigged against you.
We’re securing grant funding for workforce development and economic mobility programs.
We’re documenting case studies. Every person who goes from $0 to $1,000/month. Every displaced worker who stops blaming themselves and starts building.
We’re creating proof that workers over 40 aren’t unemployable. The system is broken. And there’s another way.
Here’s the core philosophy of The Unfireables:
One job = one point of failure.
One boss can fire you. One company can lay you off. One economic downturn can eliminate your entire industry.
And when that happens, you’re back at zero. Sending applications. Hoping someone saves you.
Multiple income streams = resilience.
When you have seven income streams and one crashes, you still have six. When Medium’s algorithm tanks and your income drops 75%, your ghostwriting clients and coaching students keep you afloat.
You’re not bulletproof. But you’re no longer fragile.
That’s what unfireable means.
Not that you’ll never struggle. Not that income will always be stable. But that no single person, company, or platform can destroy you.
You’ve built something diversified enough that failure in one area doesn’t mean catastrophe.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Join the community.
The Unfireables is the movement, the community is Over 40 and Unemployed, and it’s free. 750+ members who’ve been rejected, ghosted, and told they’re too old. You’ll find support, resources, and proof that other people are building their way out.
Step 2: Learn The Great Pivot framework.
Eight modules over 90 days. How to build your first income stream. Then your second. How to reverse engineer the life you want instead of begging for the job someone will give you.
Not a course you complete and forget. A framework you use to build real income while the job market keeps ignoring you.
A new cohort is starting soon, join The Great Pivot community to find out when.
Step 3: Build in public.
Document your journey. Share your wins and your struggles. Connect with others doing the same thing.
Because the isolation is what kills you. The belief that you’re the only one failing while everyone else has it together.
Building in public proves you’re not alone. And it creates accountability that keeps you going when you want to quit.
Step 4: Make your first dollar.
$5 from a freelance gig. $50 from your first Medium article. $500 from a consulting call.
It doesn’t matter how much. It matters that you proved you can generate income without corporate approval.
That shift — from waiting for permission to taking control — is everything.
Step 5: Stack income streams.
One stream hits $500/month. Add a second. Stack to $1,000, then $2,000, then $3,000.
Not because you’re greedy. Because you’re building resilience. Because one stream can crash and you’ll survive.
Step 6: Help the next person.
Once you’ve built something that works, you help someone else do the same.
Because The Unfireables isn’t about individual success. It’s about creating proof that this path works for anyone willing to build.
The Unfireables matters because millions of people are suffering in silence right now.
They’re convinced the problem is them. That they’re not trying hard enough, not qualified enough, not good enough.
They’re applying for jobs that ghost them. They’re interviewing for positions they’ll never get. They’re spending hours crafting cover letters nobody will read.
And the whole time, they’re drowning financially while pretending to be fine.
The Unfireables gives them permission to stop pretending.
It proves the problem isn’t them. It’s the system.
And it offers a path forward that doesn’t depend on the system changing.
Here’s where The Unfireables is headed:
Partnerships with organizations that serve displaced workers.
AARP has 38 million members over 50. Goodwill Industries serves millions of job seekers. Workforce development centers exist in every state.
We bring The Great Pivot framework to them. We prove income generation works. We create measurable outcomes: dollars earned, not just “job readiness.”
Grant funding for workforce development programs.
Most grants require proof of concept. The Unfireables is building that proof right now.
Every case study. Every documented income progression. Every testimonial from someone who went from $0 to $1,000/month.
That becomes the foundation for grant applications that fund expansion.
A movement that changes the narrative.
Right now, the narrative is: if you’re over 40 and unemployed, something is wrong with you.
The Unfireables flips that: if you’re over 40 and the job market rejected you, something is wrong with the system.
We prove displaced workers aren’t unemployable. They’re done playing a game rigged against them.
And we show them how to build something the system can’t reject.
The Unfireables needs three things to succeed:
1. Displaced workers willing to build.
People ready to stop waiting for the system to save them. People willing to try something different even when it’s scary and uncertain.
You don’t need to be an entrepreneur. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be willing to start.
2. Organizations willing to try what works.
Workforce development centers. Community colleges. Corporate outplacement programs.
Organizations that understand resume workshops aren’t solving the problem and are willing to try income generation training instead.
3. Proof that this works.
Every person who makes their first dollar outside employment is proof.
Every case study showing progression from $0 to $1,000/month is proof.
Every testimonial from someone who stopped blaming themselves and started building is proof.
The more proof we create, the more people we can help.
I’m building The Unfireables because I know what it feels like to be rejected 850 times and convinced it’s your fault.
I know what it’s like to be 57, broke, and terrified you’ll never earn a living again.
I know what it’s like to send applications into the void and wonder if you’ve become invisible.
And I know what it feels like when you make your first dollar outside the system that rejected you.
That moment when you realize: I don’t need their permission. I can build this myself.
The Unfireables exists to give other people that moment.
The Great Pivot framework is live. The first cohort launched in February 2026. The second cohort launches in April.
Over 40 and Unemployed has 750+ members and growing.
Medium & Substack Mastery teaches people to monetize their writing.
The proof of concept is building in real time.
And The Unfireables movement is just getting started.
By the end of 2026, The Unfireables will have:
1,000+ community members
100+ documented case studies
Partnerships with at least three major organizations
Grant funding secured
A replicable framework proving income generation works
And we’ll have created a movement that proves one thing:
You’re not unemployable. The system is broken. And there’s another way.
If you’ve been rejected, ghosted, or told you’re too old — you belong here.
If you’re tired of pretending while barely surviving — you belong here.
If you’re ready to build something they can’t fire you from — you belong here.
Join Over 40 and Unemployed (free community, 650+ members): Join Here!
Learn The Great Pivot (90-day income framework): Launches Soon!
Follow the build: I’m documenting everything in real time. The wins, the failures, the income crashes, the breakthroughs.
Because The Unfireables isn’t about me succeeding alone. It’s about all of us building together.
We’re not waiting for permission.
We’re not begging for jobs.
We’re building income, community, and proof that there’s another path.
The Unfireables is here.
And we’re just getting started.
