One of the most pervasive illusions in political thought is the assumption that power operates primarily in the present. Governments govern the present. Economies allocate resources in the present. Armies fight in the present. Revolutions occur in the present. Even historians, who devote themselves to the study of the past, generally assume that the past acts upon the present through chains of causation extending forward through time. The future appears only as a consequence. It is treated as an effect rather than a cause. This assumption is so deeply embedded in modern consciousness that it is rarely questioned. Yet from the standpoint of Metapolemos it is fundamentally mistaken.
