Tom Bearden’s interpretation of the UFO phenomenon follows inevitably from his conviction that physical reality is not an ontologically self-sufficient domain but the terminal, stabilized expression of informational patterns originating in the virtual state. If thought-forms are objectively real within their own orthogonal mind-worlds, and if sufficient temporal coherence can kindle such forms downward through the neutrinic and electromagnetic biofields until they become visible or material, then a UFO need not be either an extraterrestrial machine traversing interstellar space or a subjective hallucination confined to the witness’s brain. It may be an objectively manifested “tulpoid”: a mental, archetypal, or possible-world configuration that has been orthorotated into our physical frame. Such a manifestation can be photographed, detected on radar, touched, entered, and capable of producing burns, paralysis, electrical interference, broken vegetation, indentations in the earth, or other material traces, while nevertheless remaining dependent upon psychological conditions for its form and stability. Bearden’s theory thereby rejects the conventional demand that UFOs must be classified as either material spacecraft or imaginary projections. He thinks they are psychophysical intersections, occupying a variable position on the continuum between private mentality and consensual matter.
