Thomas E. Bearden’s The Excalibur Briefing is best understood not simply as an eccentric treatise on UFOs, parapsychology, psychotronic weaponry, or unconventional electromagnetism, but as an audacious attempt to formulate a grand unified theory of the paranormal—one that would dissolve the Cartesian opposition of mind and matter by situating both within a multidimensional ontology whose most fundamental stratum is neither material substance nor mental representation, but a virtually structured plenum of informational potential. It is not a “grand unified theory” in the conventional sense of reconciling the strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational interactions within a single mathematical framework, although Bearden does repeatedly suggest that gravitation and electromagnetism are divergent orientations or closures of a more fundamental hyperfield flux. His project is even more expansive. Bearden intends to unify physics and metaphysics, observable and paranormal phenomena, life and death, waking perception and dream, individual intention and collective archetypal manifestation, by proposing that every determinate physical object is a differentiated and stabilized selection from a deeper “virtual” domain in which all possibilities coexist.
