In his still unpublished and suppressed manuscript Tesla’s Magnifying Transmitter, written between 1977 and 1980, Andrija Puharich argues that this infamous device was not simply an exceptionally large Tesla coil, not merely a radio transmitter, and not even primarily a means of radiating electromagnetic energy through the atmosphere. Rather, it was a planetary resonator designed to couple an artificial electrical oscillator to the natural oscillatory system formed by the conductive Earth, the dielectric atmosphere, and the conductive ionosphere, so that the terrestrial globe itself would become the principal conductor, resonant cavity, energy reservoir, and ultimately the transmitting antenna.
The crucial discovery, according to Puharich, occurred at Colorado Springs on July 3, 1899, when Nikola Tesla generated an immense artificial electrical discharge and concluded from its delayed echoes that electrical impulses could travel through the Earth, reach the antipodal region, return to their point of origin, and thereby establish stationary or standing waves within the planet; just as a relatively small periodic push, correctly timed, can set a massive pendulum swinging through a progressively greater arc, the transmitter would repeatedly “tap” the Earth at one of its natural periods until energy accumulated within the planetary system by resonance. According to this interpretation, Tesla therefore does not overcome distance by radiating more and more power indiscriminately into space; he overcomes distance by tuning transmitter, planet, atmosphere, and receiver into a single oscillator, within which geographical separation ceases to be the decisive limitation because every receiving station becomes another resonant node of the same globally excited structure. This is why Puharich treats the device as potentially more important than all of Tesla’s other inventions. The polyphase system distributed electricity through wires, whereas the Magnifying Transmitter would convert the entire planet into an electrical machine capable of carrying power, information, mechanical influence, and biological modulation without wires to any selected point on its surface.
