Jasmin D the RD · Jasmin D the RD

Hello to my lovely community of gut-health obsessed people. I’m Jasmin, you’re favorite gut health dietitian. I wanted to start sending you a weekly article every Monday — as I like to call it “The (Literal) Weekly Digest (TLWD)”.

I’ll be resharing everything I had posted the week before in case you missed it, a recipe I recommend you make the following week, and something I’ll be focusing on for the week - of course, gut health-related.

  1. Sunday Seasonal - August Week 2: Where I provide you with 2-4 new recipes every Sunday that are made with produce that are seasonal to that month.

  2. You Need to Learn How to Cook: You want to master the fundamentals of cooking so you can understand how to use different ingredients, techniques, and flavors to be able to make your own recipes! This is why I’ve created my “Back to Basics” series. I’m welcoming you back to Episode 10: How to Bake a Delicious Sweet Potato

  3. Start Here: The Jasmin D the RD Gut Health Library: I’ve realized over time that many of my recipes or gut health articles are either on here, my website, or only on my Instagram. If you know me at all, you know I’m type A and prefer having everything in one place. So, from here on out, you can expect to see everything you need under this area I called The Jasmin D the RD Library. You’ll have every recipe and gut health article categorized in one place.

  4. The truth about fiber?: Not every type works the same way: I wish more people knew that not all sources of fiber work the same way! They don’t all do the same thing for your body. Here’s the thing, before we start maximizing our fiber intake, we should take the time to actually understand what fiber is, what it can do, and that not all sources of fiber all work the same or have the same job.

  5. How to Make Actually Good Hummus: This recipe of mine has over 9000 views on my blog, and for a good reason. As your (Syrian-American) go-to gut health dietitian, I believe it is my civil duty to give you my hummus recipe that has been passed down generations within my family.

Since I’m leaving for Massachusetts (one last time until Christmas) tomorrow, I made sure to be smart about my grocery haul this week and kept it to a minimum. Here are some recipes I’ve made this week so far!

  1. A chicken salad recipe using seasonal ingredients such as apples, cucumber, and celery.

  2. A steak dinner with a side of arugula and my delicious Lemon Sumac Potatoes.

  3. A breakfast incorporating my new Asparagus & Tomato Egg Bake.

  4. A delightful tuna melt !!

This week on The (Literal) Weekly Digest, I’m focusing on being intentional with eating my prebiotic sources of fiber. It’s normal to get into the habit of eating the same foods, that’s what helps most people stay on track with their health goals, right? Absolutely. But, on the opposite side, I like to be the one to remind you that you also want to be intentional about diversifying your food choices. Eating all the colors of the rainbow (aka all different sources of fiber — fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and grains) ensures you’re actively feeding different strains of gut bacteria in your large intestine. What does this mean?

Imagine you have a garden. You need seeds and fertilizer. Without fertilizer, your seeds won’t be able to grow as well and we want you to have a flourishing, green garden, correct? Seeds and fertilizer have a symbiotic relationship.

Great. No, you have prebiotics and probiotics that have the same relationship— prebiotics act as the fertilizer, aka the food source, and probiotics act as the seeds.

Ensuring you’re intentionally eating prebiotics — food sources for probiotics in your digestive tract — will help build a stronger, healthier gut.

Now that we’ve got the science down, here are the sources of prebiotics I’ve been actively eating this week.

  1. Bananas

  2. Onions (my marinated sumac onions, specifically)

  3. Asparagus (asparagus recipe coming this week on Sunday Seasonal…)

  4. Artichokes

  5. Apples

I’ve always had a ShopMy account, but I honestly never really knew how to use it. Yesterday, I spent several hours completely revamping and curating my dashboard so that it’s actually useful for you guys. It’s WAY easier to shop everything I’m wearing, using, and loving as a gut health RD /content creator.

  1. Food Favorite: Naoki Matcha - I’ve tried out several matcha brands and Naoki’s matcha remains unmatched.

  1. Gut Health Favorite: Camu Camu Powder -If you’ve never heard of camu camu, it’s a fruit that grows on a shrub native to the Amazon rainforest. Its small, sour berries are naturally rich in vitamin C, making it a delicious and easy way to add more vitamin C to your diet. Not medical advice.

  2. Skin Favorite: Patrick Ta Major Glow Nourishing Bronzing Body Oil - it’s summer time and the one product that allows me to leave the house feeling confident is this bronzing body oil by Patrick Ta. It gives you a natural, bronzed glow without staining your clothes!

  3. Storage Favorite: 2 Set Pantry Organizers and Storage with Bamboo Lids - these are what I use to easily store my potatoes and onions separately. You want to make sure you’re not storing onions with other produce because they can spoil faster!

  4. Kitchen Favorite: Caraway ® Cream Ceramic Non-Stick 4.5-Qt. Sauté Pan - this pan has brought me so much joy. I’ve been on the hunt for a high quality, non-stick pan, that actually lasts (paint doesn’t easily chip), and has a lid. This Caraway pan is my favorite pan I own right now and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Whenever I partner with brands I truly love, I make sure to secure discount codes for you—so you can try my trusted recommendations as a gut health dietitian.

  • Ka’Chava: JASMIN15 - “optimal blend of essential nutrients and functional foods to nourish you from head to toe”.

  • SideDish: JASMIND15 - “sauces and dressings made without over-processed seed oils (prefer 100% avocado oil), refined sugar, gluten, dairy, or preservatives.”

  • Drink Wholesome: real foods for 10% off - “Minimally-Processed Protein Powder for Sensitive Stomachs”

  • Oliva Dorado: Jasmin15 - Harvested early in Spain at peak freshness, this extra virgin olive oil delivers a bold, vibrant flavor you simply can’t get from standard oils. If you care about quality, flavor, and what you’re putting into your body, this is the upgrade your kitchen has been missing.
