Jasmine Neal · Jas and Olive

In August, we find ourselves at the peak of summer, struggling to manage the scorching heat. (Unless, like me, you live in northern California.) Ruffled peonies are a distant memory, and dahlias begin to bloom in full force. For those who have carefully nurtured a Dutchman’s pipe cactus houseplant (Epiphyllum oxypetalum), you’ll now have the chance to enjoy its short-lived, fragrant nocturnal blooms.

While this list is not exhaustive, you can use it as a reference to get an idea of which flowers are in season this month. Remember, buying seasonal blooms will keep your cost per stem low and ensure you have the healthiest and most vibrant flowers for your designs. I’ve included both the common and scientific names for clarity, as you may come across either while sourcing your flowers.

From left to right: Glads (Gladiolus spp.), silver dollar eucalyptus (Eucalyptus cinerea), calla lily (Lilium spp.), sunflower (Helianthus spp.), spray roses (Rosa spp.), jumbo mum ball (Chrysanthemum spp.), baby blue eucalyptus (Eucalyptus pulverulenta), dahlia (Dahlia spp.), goldenrod (Solidago spp.)
