Are the stories we inherit true, or just a script we were handed? An artist's look at childhood memories, secrets, and unspooling the past.

The Myths We Inherit in Childhood

Abstract Art and Narrative from Secrets, Lies and Liberation - a series about inherited scripts

Long before we had words, our nervous system was transcribing. Each time we were soothed or dismissed, welcomed or shamed, our young brain adjusted.

We pretend the bitter critiques, swallowed as children, have fully dissolved. After all, poking at old wounds is self-centred and utterly indulgent.

The grey wash of composure often hides what we aren’t permitted to feel. But the lines don’t lie; they carry the history we try to obscure.

Many of our anxieties, sensitivities and emotional spikes are echoes of childhood wounds. What made us feel unsafe, unloved or ashamed back then, can still live in us now, showing up in ways we can’t immediately explain.
