When Facing a Threshold

James McCrae · Being Nobody

In my last post, Being Nobody, I wrote about how, after an unexpected separation, I’ve been living on a ranch in Texas, deconstructing my identity and returning home to myself.

I’ve found myself writing more poetry. Each morning when I open my notebook, I’m reminded that every creative act (much like life) is a ritual of faith and exploration. The blank page is a liminal space of uncharted territory and infinite possibilities. We discover the path as we go, one word at a time.

Similarly, it’s only by stripping ourselves down to nothing – becoming a blank page – and stepping blindly into the threshold of the unknown that we can transmute what feels stuck into a new version of ourselves.

When the winds of change start to blow, humility and reverence will serve you better than clinging to a false sense of certainty.

My poetry has been drawing from my experiences at the ranch, reflections on loss, solitude, and nature. Here’s one:

Peace in uncertainty

It’s easy to feel at peace
in a comfortable place
where everything is safe
and certain.

But the winds are capable
of changing direction without warning,
and all things exist in a constant state
of transition. So how can one feel at peace
when nothing is certain or stable?

I don’t know how long I’ll be living
on this ranch, or if my wife and I
will get back together.

Sometimes we can’t see the road ahead,
but can only take one step at a time,
patiently into the unknown.

Each morning I wake up, step outside,
take a deep breath of fresh air, and ask
the quiet intelligence of the universe
where to move my feet.

When I get into the zone while writing, it often feels like the words come, not from me, but through me. I’m not thinking, but taking dictation from some quiet voice that can only be heard when I slow down my busy mind and listen.

The thing about crossing a new threshold is that it happens through surrender, not force. You can’t climb over the gate. You have to let your old self die and be buried so you can dig your way through the dirt and emerge on the other side.

Are you currently in a season of change and uncertainty? Let me know in the comments. I recently posted this drawing on Substack notes, and the response I received was overwhelming:

It seems I’m not the only one. When the cosmic tides start to change, we all feel it.

I recently hosted a workshop in my Sunflower Club creative community that I want to make publicly available: Crossing the Threshold: The Hidden Upgrade in Uncertainty.

In this workshop, we examine the threshold from the mythic lens, explore the current cultural crisis, and do rituals to step into your next timeline.

Includes:

  • Presentation

  • Guided meditation

  • Writing exercises
