Happy holidays, happy 2025, etc!

  • Reviews of 3 Android games I’d been playing in December, although none too obsessively!

  • An investigation of the 150+ “Octocats” published by GitHub, including back stories, insight from the original creators, and more.

  • I’ve started a new project, and as part of it needed a ~70k word dictionary. There wasn’t quite one that fit my requirements, so I made an open source one.

  • At work, I decided I’d had enough of our slow increase in Play Store rating, and needed to do something drastic. The results? Increasing from 2.2 to 4.7 in just 2 weeks(!!!), and now up to the likely final value of 4.8. Excellent, here’s how it was done (and on reddit).

  • There’s plenty of Spotify Wrapped style sites for GitHub, but I like this one. Unsurprisingly my most used language is Kotlin, and I made nearly 3k commits in 2024.

  • A detailed investigation into PNGs, and how small a file they can be.

  • The hand signals and supply lines used in Hong Kong’s 2019 protests.

  • A search engine for the “classic web”, lots of limited styling, no JavaScript, just interesting and informative sites. Very nostalgic if you wandered around online in the 2000s!

  • A timeline of important events for humanity, but scaled by total passed human lifetime. This takes a second to understand, essentially although the last few centuries have seen astronomical progress, it’s a lot more understandable when considering there are many, many times more humans around than before. By this metric, we’re as far from the first nuclear explosion as it is from the invention of Gutenberg’s Printing Press.

That’s about it! I’ll talk about my new project next month. Maybe. 👋
