That’s the premise of my webinar recorded for the Autistic Mental Health Conference 2026 which you can watch below.
Curated around the theme of Ecosystemic Causes of Mental Health issues, the event hosted a variety of talks for Autistic people; parents and families; professionals and practitioners; and advocates and allies.
My own presentation challenges therapists to take the next step in their neuroaffirming practice. It suggests important considerations for Autistic people and families who may be seeking their own therapy, as well as anyone advising or supporting.
In my webinar, you’ll learn about:
The Ecosystemic Model of Distress & Wellbeing and how we and our mental health cannot be separated from our environments
How Autistic people’s existence is politicised by these environments, leading to the questioning of our very being
How Autistic people and therapists can resist pathologisation and push back against neuronormativity
The core role power and privilege play in our environments, including therapeutic spaces
What neuronormativity is and how it shapes mental health services
Why therapeutic practice can be so slow to change and embrace the reality of neurodiversity
How Western therapy is shaped by privileged groups and pathologises and others those who can’t or don’t comply with systems of power
The limitations of person centred therapy when faced with neuronormativity
What Autistic people can do to access neuroaffirming services
The importance and value of lived experience in neuroaffirming practice
What neuroaffirming actually looks like
How professionals can get the basics right even if they don’t specialise in - or know much about - neuroaffirming support
How as therapists we all need to take accountability for our work with marginalised people and that we can all inadvertently cause harm
What therapists can do to take the next step or begin their journey in neuroaffirming practice
