The behind-the-scenes reality check

There’s one thing that’s annoyed me about launching this Substack: I don’t have a bank of content sitting here yet. So when I point people this way, I’m painfully aware they land on a page that’s giving… crickets (not the vibe I was going for tbh)

So I’ve decided to fix that the honest way. Over the next week or so I’m uploading some of my favourite editions of A Letter to My Readers. It’s my monthly series where I basically use this newsletter as free therapy and take you behind the scenes of the highs, the lows, the wins and the losses of working for myself.

If you’ve never read these, you’re about to see them pop up (enjoy!) If you’ve read them before, then no, you’re not going mad, they’re repeat editions. I just want to bulk this place out a little so it feels like the home it’s going to be.

Over the past 3-4 years, I’ve built a personal brand rooted in educational content from scratch. The result? A community of almost 300,000 creators and entrepreneurs, all of whom have (hopefully) learnt something new through my content.

The downside? I realised I haven’t nurtured a connection with my audience as well as I should have. My content has often been focused on just delivering knowledge, which is great, but it also means we haven’t truly connected with you all on a more meaningful level. I’m at a point in my career where I’m craving that stronger connection with you.

You might be wondering what triggered this email. I was reflecting on a comment I received on a vlog with a creator friend recently. The comment said something along the lines of, “No one cares about your life, we don’t want vlogs, we want you to teach us something.” Don’t get me wrong, the delivery of this message was 0/10 much room for improvement 😂. HOWEVER, the author had a point; how could I expect you guys to care about what I have to say beyond educational tips and tricks if I haven’t created any content that allows you to care?

I want to be the creator you turn to not only to learn something new but also to feel inspired, intrigued, and to see the real behind-the-scenes of content creation. I want to share more than just tips and tricks; I want to share the journey: the highs, the lows, the messy middle. I want to do more than teach; I want to connect.

And that’s why I’m launching this new email series, A Letter to My Readers. On the first Monday of each month, you’ll receive a letter from me to you, directly in your inbox.

Expect to see a side of me you haven’t seen before, gain insights that people don’t usually share, and hopefully learn something you weren’t planning on learning that day. It’s going to be raw, real, and filled with the kind of stuff I wish someone had told me when I was starting out.
I can’t wait to start this new chapter with you all. I promise to bring my whole self to these letters, and I hope you find value in them, both tangible and intangible. ​
