IYSS January STEM Opportunity Newsletter

Dear reader, welcome to IYSS’s second newsletter! We’re so excited to bring this to you at the beginning of the new year.

Throughout the month of January there are plenty of opportunities for students interested in STEM! We’ve collected a list of eight opportunities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. Below is a collection of scholarships, hackathons, webinars, internships, research opportunities, and programs that will either be held this month or have applications open/due this January. 

1. The ScholarSHPE provides the opportunity for Hispanic students interested in STEM to receive funding to help them further their education in a STEM-based field and take steps toward their future career. 2. The William Griggs Memorial Scholarship for Science and Math awards $2,500 to any female high school senior or undergraduate student pursuing a two or four-year degree program in science or mathematics who applies for, and wins this scholarship. 3. Richard Kim Medicine is holding its Stem Cell Seminar on January 17th, 2024. This seminar will teach students about the body’s repair system, and how embryonic and adult stem cells contribute to the proper function of the human body. 4. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science is holding a webinar on January 10th, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. ET. This webinar will provide information about the DOE Office of Science Early Career Research Program, which will support over 80 early career researchers for five years at U.S. academic institutions, DOE national laboratories, and Office of Science user facilities. The pre-applications for the program are due January 30, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. ET. 5. The Web3Apps Hackathon will occur January 19th-21st. This hackathon will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in fun, open-themed coding activities. Participant skill-level can range from beginner to veteran. 6. The Stanford School of Medicine Summer Research Program aims to increase interest in biological sciences and medicine within high-school students. Participants will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves into the biomedical scientific research process throughout an 8-week period. 6. The MITES summer program held by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology provides students with the opportunity to explore their passion for STEM through Classes, recitations, workshops, and tours, all held throughout a 6-week period. Applications are due February 1st. 8. The Summer Science Program is perfect for students interested in Astrophysics, Biochemistry, and Genomics. The Summer Science Program offers teens an exhilarating and inspiring immersion into hands-on experimental science. The Summer Science Program provides an exciting and motivating experience for teenagers to deeply engage in hands-on experimental science. Participants collaborate in teams of three, with 36 students and 7 faculty creating a supportive "living and learning community" during the 39-day program. Each team conducts a genuine research project, collecting and analyzing original data. Upon completion, participants become part of a global network of over 2,500 alumni of various ages. 9. The Johns Hopkins Internship in Brain Sciences (JHIBS) is a summer research initiative designed for junior and senior high school students, offering them the opportunity to explore and develop an interest in the field of neurological sciences.
