Dear reader, welcome to IYSS’s first newsletter! We’re so excited to bring this to you in December before the start of the New Year!
Throughout the month of December, there are plenty of opportunities for students interested in STEM! We’ve collected a list of eight opportunities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. Below is a collection of scholarships, hackathons, webinars, internships, research opportunities, and programs that will either be held or have applications due this December.
The Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship and Internship program gives students the opportunity to receive a total of $40,000 over the span of 4 years for an undergraduate degree in engineering or computer science. Additionally, winners are granted the opportunity to complete a summer internship at Amazon. The applications for this opportunity are open and due by December 15th at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The AvaCare Medical Scholarship is for aspiring medical professionals. The winner will receive a $1000 award to be put toward an undergraduate medical degree. To apply, students must write an essay sharing a specific act of kindness that has inspired them. The AvaCare Medical judges will select 5 to 10 finalists who will have their submissions posted on the AvaCare Medical website. At that point, each submission will be voted upon and the number of votes will contribute toward who is selected as the winner. The applications for this opportunity are due by December 15th at 12:00 a.m Eastern Standard Time. The MIT Think Scholars Program emphasizes science, research, and innovations amongst highschool students. Applicants must decide on a potential research project that can be completed within one semester with a $1000 budget and submit an written in-depth research proposal outlining a novel science, technology, or engineering idea following the proceeding guidelines. The CodeChef “Starters 111-114” competition will take place every Wednesday throughout December, 2023. Competitors must pass test data and submit coding solutions to simulated problems. CodeChef aspires to inspire youth to explore the world of coding and use it to solve real world problems. Winners will receive up to $10,000. The Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) has teamed up with National Science Foundation (NSF) to create the EPSCoR Collaborations for Optimizing Research Ecosystems Research Infrastructure Improvement Program. This program attempts to foster an interest in STEM-based research. Up to 15 winners will be chosen to receive a shared $37,000. Applications are due December 6th, 2023. The “Advances in Studying Genetic Variation at Scale in Stem Cell Models” webinar by the International Society for Stem Cell Research is being held December 12th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m - 12:30 p.m Eastern Standard Time. This webinar will investigate how research on genetic diversity in stem cell models can provide insights into the mechanisms of disease, decision-making processes in developmental biology, and the interpretation of clinical variants. The “PoweringSTEMHacks” hackathon will take place December 28th-31st, 2023. The theme of this hackathon is medical innovation. Applicants must create a device, method, or concept that would help improve medical treatments or procedures and create a one minute long video explaining their idea. The National Science Teaching Association will be holding a webinar about petrology and mineralogy on December 7th, 2023 from 7:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. This webinar will focus on identifying rocks and minerals and using observations to learn about ancient history, climate change, and resource availability.
