IYSS April STEM Opportunity Newsletter

Throughout the month of April there are plenty of opportunities for students interested in STEM! We’ve collected a list of eight opportunities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. Below is a collection of scholarships, hackathons, webinars, internships, research opportunities, and programs that will either be held this month or have applications open/due during April. 

1. The Accelerating Systematic Change in STEM Higher Education company is holding a webinar on April 15th, 2024 entitled, “Catalyzing Change in STEM: Strategies for Inclusion, Equity, and Social Impact.” This webinar delves into strategies for catalyzing positive changes and broadening participation in STEM disciplines, emphasizing the crucial role of leadership in driving these efforts forward. 2. The American Astronomical Society is holding a webinar about Models and Assumptions inclusive STEM education as part of the Physics and Astronomy SEA change initiative. This webinar will take place on April 12th, 2024, and it will discuss investigating assumptions and their consequences as an effort to improve social equity within mathematics and sciences.

3. The Junior National Society of Black Engineers is holding a Try-Math-A-Lon (TMAL) - a tutoring initiative targeting underrepresented STEM groups, nurturing study skills and readiness for exams like ACT and SAT, enhancing STEM course success, and encouraging competition and sportsmanship. Teams of 9th to 12th-grade students engage in in-person team testing and a quiz bowl within TMAL competitions. 4. The COX Science Center and Aquarium is holding the Wave Makers STEM Competition - an opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and passion for Floridian science and ocean life. Students aged 4-18 can participate for the chance to win a $5,000 educational scholarship. Participants must Highlight their favorite, most intriguing fact or finding about Florida's ocean and/or wildlife in a creative 1 minute video. 5. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science is holding a webinar on Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce. Pre-applications for participants are due on April 30th, 2024. Participants will help deliver scientific discoveries and major scientific tools to transform our understanding of nature and advance the energy, economic, and national security of the United States. 6. The University of California San Francisco Center for Education and Outreach is providing the CURE Internship, with applications due on April 15th, 2024. The CURE Internship is a paid opportunity for high school juniors underrepresented in health careers to spend two months at UCSF supporting various types of research. 7. The Tufts University Biomedical Engineering Research Scholars (TUBERS) Program is dedicated to providing unique and rewarding research experiences at Tufts for dedicated, academically-talented high school students. Students will be involved in cutting-edge biomedical research, investigating biomedical questions and developing new methods to study cells, tissues, and organs. 8. Stem.com is holding a webinar entitled, “Stem's Modular, Flexible Approach to Utility-scale Energy Storage,” will be held on April 30th, 2024. This webinar will discuss current challenges faced by battery project developers and asset owners, How companies can gain procurement optionality for battery energy storage hardware, and more topics regarding energy storage.
