The First Hour: My Exact Morning Routine, in the Order I Do Everything

There’s a particular sort of morning most people never get, and I want to give it to you.

Not the frantic one, phone in hand before both eyes are open, coffee poured into an empty stomach, out the door already behind. The other kind. The slow, deliberate, almost sacred first hour, where by the time the rest of the world is just beginning to panic, you’re already clear, calm, awake, and softly ahead. I didn’t always have mornings like this. For years mine were chaos, and I did every single thing in the wrong order and wondered why none of it worked. This essay is everything I learned climbing out of that, and it’s, I think, the most useful hour I could ever hand you.

Because here’s the secret at the center of all of it, the thing almost nobody understands: with a morning, the order is everything. There are two things in this hour that, taken thirty seconds apart, are worth several times what they’re worth taken separately, and I’ll show you exactly why. Anyone can own the pieces. Arranging them so that each one sets up the next, so the whole hour builds like a piece of music instead of scattering like noise, is the part that changes how you feel by nine in the morning and, I promise you, how you feel about your entire life. A morning done in the right order isn’t a chore. It is the closest thing I have to a daily act of devotion to myself, and once you feel the difference, you’ll never willingly go back.

Let me be honest with you before we start, the way I always am. This is my first hour on a good morning, when I have the time and the space to move through all of it. There are mornings I skip half the list, and on those I keep the three or four that matter most and let the rest go without a flicker of guilt, and I’ll tell you exactly which ones those are. Some of what follows is backed by real, serious science, which I’ll give you plainly and in plain english, no jargon walls, because knowledge you can’t understand is useless to you. And some of it is ritual, pure pleasure, and I’ll always tell you when something is ritual rather than dress it up as medicine. Not one brand in here pays me. Nothing is sponsored. These are simply the things I reach for.

Here’s the whole hour, from the second my eyes open. Walk through it with me.
