I achieved a major goal from my New Year’s resolution during this crazy week I had, and, I cannot stop smiling about it.

I learnt how to plait my hair.

More context: I learnt how to make cornrows on my head

It’s the best thing I have achieved this year. I don’t expect you to understand the happiness in me, but I expect you to read to the end and clap for me.

See, I grew up with the mindset that I CAN learn anything at all. It is probably the reason why I have so many hobbies.

Imagine my frustration when I’d try to understand the rocket science behind making braided hair gum tight on one’s scalp.

I started learning how to braid hair at age 7 from my childhood friend. It was easy learning how to cross over strands of hair to form knots on the heads of pretty dolls. We’d spend hours and hours playing pretend with the dolls, mimicking our hairdressers.

Oya, put your head one place.”

“Mummy, go and buy sweet so she’ll stop crying.”

Good times!

In senior secondary school, when we finally reached the class where we could plait our hair, I’d spend Saturdays admiring and watching everyone who could plait hair. I’d watch and try sometimes, only for the hair to keep slipping out of my fingers.

In my final year in uni, Bimbo would shout at me to go and learn how to make hair so I can help her in her “salon”. I think I tried once on a mannequin and made the ugliest loose braids ever.

But Oh my Jesus!!

Somebody shout POWER!!!!!!!!

Shout JESUS POWERRRRRRR

My deliverance from the shackles of misunderstanding cameeeeeee

Oh, it came like a rushing windddddddd and enveloped me.

OBASHATAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

Lemme tell you about it

It’s the early hours of Thursday, 1am.

I have a busy day ahead. I’ve been stressing about it, so I’m up preparing (the day was very shitty in the end). I’m studying, compiling, multitasking because I also have to wash and cut waterleaves.

My mind goes to the rough all-back (cornrows) on my head. It’s not yet two weeks old, but oh, it is so rough, it’s nothing to write home about.

At the beginning of this week, I revisited my New Year’s resolution because it felt like I wasn’t actively pursuing a goal. And recently, I put myself up to the task of learning how to do menial jobs. Future plan, I’d love to have my own house. I’m thinking of learning how to fix random stuff around my house, do stuff on my own, instead of always paying for service. This makes me sound stingy, but on Sunday evening, my family and I got stuck in our house. The entrance door had issues, and there was no carpenter around. If not for our neighbour and his toolbox, we’d probably have spent the week indoors. I would have loved that, so yeah, that’s why I need to learn stuff.

So I say to myself, let’s braid this hair.

What’s the worst that can happen?

“I make loose ugly braids and wear a wig to work as usual. There’s nothing to lose.”

I go on TikTok to search for a tutorial on making cornrows. The internet has all the answers if you open your heart. I learnt how to do makeup, how to design on canva etc on the internet.

I found a tutorial, watched it, rewatched it, and followed the instructions wholly. The creator said the trick to getting the braid is to “close your eyes while doing it.”

I thought that sounded absurd.

How will I see what I am doing with my eyes closed? I obeyed, though, and yeah, it all made sense.

SENSORY DEPRIVATION

Closing my eyes aided sensory deprivation, so now my ability to feel with my finger pads is heightened. They work as my eyes, and trust me, they worked better

AND THAT’S HOW I MADE MY FIRST CORNROW.

I spent Democracy Day undoing and plaiting my rough cornrows. Cheers to another 2 weeks of wearing wigs.

So yaaay meeeeeeeee

UP NEXT:
-Pottery classes

-driving classes

-plumbing lessons

Do you now believe when I say I write whatever is in my head?

How are you doing? I hope you’re good and hope you’ve revisited your new year’s resolution to re-strategize. What amazing thing have you accomplished this year?
