Dmitriy Simes argues Russia's best negotiators aren't diplomats but ‘Iskander,’ ‘Oreshnik,’ ‘Burevestnik,’ and ‘Kalibr.’

In a lengthy article in the “New York Times,” European correspondent Stephen Erlanger discusses how European powers, primarily the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, want to play a leading role in upcoming negotiations with Russia. However, the article states that Vladimir Putin is currently not ready for negotiations and that they are likely to begin later, after additional pressure has been applied to Russia.

This pressure is discussed in a recently published article in the “Sunday Times,” which explains how Britain is providing Ukraine with drones for strikes deep inside Russian territory. It is noted that London plans to provide Ukraine with as many as 150,000 “high-tech strike drones” by the end of the year, which will be able to overcome Russian air defenses. In addition, they will be supplying the latest and most affordable cruise missiles. How can Russia respond to this?

Naturally, both our enemies in Europe and those who support them to some extent, as well as the administration of Donald Trump, understand that defeating Russia quickly on the battlefield is impossible. However, they can impose a war of attrition on us, while simultaneously trying to undermine Russia’s geopolitical influence and, moreover, its internal stability. This strategy is clearly part of the European plan.

Therefore, I believe that we should consider the possibility of serious negotiations, and I even have candidates in mind for who should be our main negotiators. I will name them: Iskander, Oreshnik, Burevestnik, and Kalibr.
