Could Your Empathy be Contaminated?

Been pondering over what is I, what is perception, what are the fields we (the thought systems) browse, and knocked my (wait, whose? Ok, let’s continue in non-dual mode for the sake of making an intelligible argument) toe on the simple realization that empathy is perception.

Contrary to popular, limiting belief, empathy is NOT the ability to directly feel another person’s emotions. It is your nervous system and thought patterns browsing the field, picking up cues, tone, body language, context, history, and then generating your own internal experience in response. Mirror neurons help simulate what the other person might be feeling, but it’s still your simulation, running on your hardware.

Instead of the usual lazy split—painting empathy as inherently good and “stone-cold intellect” as superior (or vice versa)—consider contamination as the real issue. The quality of your perception—whether it shows up as empathy or intellect—depends entirely on how contaminated your thought system is (call it your lens, your ego, or your self—doesn’t matter).

In this context specifically… First of all—it is a limitation, a wound, an obstacle, an injury. Contamination is anything we refuse to let go of (attachment) - old wounds, identity defenses, shame, guilt, the need to be right/win, the fear of being bad, the compulsion to control how others perceive us (impossible btw). And the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.

Whether that self-image is proudly inflated (I’m an empathetic woman, I’m a creative girl) or shamefully deflated (I’m a bad girl, I bring nothing on the table) amounts to contamination either way. Excessive worship of someone (the golden calf!) or yourself is no healthier than holding distain (the scapegoat to be sacrificed/martyrized!)—either way, clear perception becomes distorted.

In survival or confrontational states (which, as we established in the previous article, the common modern man spends an overwhelming amount of time) the contamination is EXTREME. Your “empathy” stops being a clear reading of the other person and turns into emotional contagion, projection, fawning or compulsive fixing. What looks or feels like intense empathy would then just be your nervous system trying to regulate itself by managing the other person.

For example, the common male urgency to fix-it when a woman vents or expresses hurt - the man immediately jumps in with solutions, lectures, or questions (what’s the matter, just do this) and on pushback (don’t patronize me!!!) will reason that he is just trying to help her. Is he, though? He seems to be oblivious to the fact that his attempt to “help” stems from his own anxiety rising around her distress and then the compulsion to remove that external trigger for his internal feelings of discomfort - meaning, he in a practical sense helping himself, not the distressed woman. He is trying to soothe his own triggered state by controlling hers - which is projection disguised as care.

Only in a regulated Green state does perception clear up. The attachments loosen. The static drops. You can see someone’s pain, anger, or fear without it flooding or hijacking you. This is where real, non-compulsive empathy becomes possible - only when you have the proverbial capacity to walk on water without getting your feet wet.

Contamination turns perception from a healing function into a bleeding function. Instead of offering clarity or genuine presence and opportunity for connection, you leak your own unprocessed material all over the situation.

The cleaner your lens, the more accurately (and harmlessly) you perceive.

The dirtier the lens, the more your “empathy” becomes another form of self-di(e)struction.

Even in Red, some forms of “empathy” still serve a limited function. Intellectual humility, the willingness to admit you might be wrong, or strategic openness can de-escalate situations and buy time. It’s the best way you can bend your pride to other people’s benefit—these are generous coping mechanisms we can pick up from “cognitive behavioural therapy” and such—not full stupidity, but low-resolution copies of the real thing. They still work because they dimly echo genuine empathy.

Yet they come at a cost. Every shield we maintain—every self-image, every story about who we are (inflated or deflated), every attachment we refuse to release—contaminates our perception and turns empathy into a bleeding function. We leak our own unprocessed material onto others while believing we’re being caring.

The miracle happens when the shields drop. Defenselessness clears the lens. Perception becomes clean. Suddenly you can walk through another person’s storm without getting your feet wet. This is true empathy—honouring the other person with clear, undefended presence.
