Khiri Lee · INVOKED

Like many people I’ve been gathering around me my intentions and dreams for the year. I am not in a place of making New Year’s Resolutions or setting clear and concise goals. Instead I am settling into an energy informed by the Card I drew at New Year’s, the animal allies and symbols found in that card, and the word that bubbled up from that message.

Last year my goal and focus was centered around Becoming a River. In a way I feel that I have accomplished that mythic quest with a new being resting in the waters of my womb, quietly growing each day to be born this Spring.

My rhythm has completely changed and I am in a phase of dreaming the foundation. When my Son was born in 2023 I put my art witch business life on hold, but as he grew, and free time filtered back to me, I simply picked up where I left off. I got back to the business of applying to galleries and exhibitions, attending art markets, and writing this newsletter. I resumed zine writing and subscriptions for my patrons. I explored the intersection of art and spell crafting. I don’t regret the time or creations but my soul spirit has been aching for a different calling. I don’t know how that will impact this space here on INVOKED, or the rest of my Artwitch practice for that matter, but I am laying a foundation to come back to my postpartum life differently with this second child.

Stewardship is rooted in care and responsibility. It is about presence with resource, place, and time. It is about trust. Ritual and the communities within which I practice have become more and more the focus of my time. I am shifting towards dreams that impact the collective versus goals that advance my individual desires. And becoming a Mother is a radical form of stewardship focused on the wellbeing of my children and my family.

My notes from New Year’s night about my Card of the Year:

I was immediately relieved to draw this card. I associate the Eight of Pentacles with pregnancy after drawing the card in a Moon Eclipse reading the week I found out I was pregnant with my first baby. I find the message to be overall positive with the word SKILL resonating with where I am in my life and the nascent ideas I have for the year. My eye was first drawn to the Beaver, an animal ally I feel calm kinship with at this time. Last year my goal was to Become a River, and the Beaver works diligently to steward the landscape of the River and create home and habitat for all those around it. Next my eye was drawn to the face in the water and then the small creature in the Willow tree. It took me a while to discern that it was a bird.

Beaver feels like a potent ally for Stewardship and the WombRiver I am currently embodying. Beavers tend to the waters. Beavers build things up and allow change to shape slowly. Beavers create lasting impact on their environments and ecological community. I am eager to learn more about Beaver both as a spiritual archetype and as actual creatures inhabiting this Earth to see what I can learn and integrate from their wisdom. In addition to Beaver I am working with the magick of African Violet as I craft simple visions under the New Moon this Sunday.

A small wish I have for this year is to continue posting zines from my collection in the Khaleidoscope Zine Archive, in part to honor all the writing and work that has gone into them, and in part to stay connected with the world through new musings and writing. For this year, as much as I am able without stress or complication, I want to share the Flower I associate with each Zodiac sign at the New Moon. These flowers each correspond to a zine from my 52 Petals Project I completed in 2021. The complete zine is available down below for Zine Club Patrons of Patreon and Subscribers to INVOKED.

African Violet is widely regarded as a flower for Capricorn, the sign of the Sea Goat in the western Zodiac. This is because the moody plums and purples of the petals correspond with Capricorns traditional color palette of black, gray, purple, and maroon.

Capricorn is a Cardinal Sign, which means it is the sign that begins a season. Capricorn Season begins with the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere., This makes them the initiators, who herald the start of a new phase of the year.

Use these words to craft a blessing, prayer, or song, honoring all that Capricorn Season has to offer us. Flowers vibrate with the language of the universe, helping us find our own songs to sing each day in praise of cosmic magick.

Diligence, Security, Ambition, Loyal, Grounded, Methodical, Organized, Focused, Internal, Architect, Earthy, Persistent, Patient, Mastery, Father Time, Crone, Saturn, Respect, Fortified, Resourceful, Elegant, Refined.

I printed the words from the Zine and blended them with other found words from my ever evolving word pool collection to create my Song for the Capricorn New Moon. It reads:

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published

 the ordinary world recedes
Navigating
SPRING Baby DILIGENCE
D R E A M
QUINTESSENTAL FORTIFIED Being
PATIENT Altar ARTCHITECT
ELEGANT Boundaries
great seas RESOURCEFUL
pomegranate Possibilities
  so sumptuous

I am especially curious about pomegranate possibilities… hmm. I felt very aligned with the Capricorn words like Architect and Diligent. They mirrored the energy of Beaver and Stewardship I want to manifest and follow through out this year inspired by my Card of the Year. If you create a Song for the Capricorn New Moon I would love to see you creations. Tag me in a note or feel free to share in the Creative Coven on Discord.
