I think women forgive bad shoes more than they forgive bad men. At least temporarily. A bad man ruins your life. A bad shoe just ruins your evening and your relationship with your closet for six months, which somehow feels manageable when the shoe is beautiful. Most closets are full of shoes bought for a woman who doesn't exist, the one who walks fine in heels, who has rooftop dinners three nights a week, who gets photographed stepping out of taxis instead of sprinting through airports. Real life gets lived in the same three pairs: the loafer by the door, the boot that works with every coat, the slingback you keep trying to donate and keep putting back on.
Below, I’ve curated the shoes that actually earn their place in a wardrobe. The pairs that survive real life, repeat wear, changing proportions, rushed mornings, long dinners, city walking, winter coats, summer denim, and every version of getting dressed in between.
